The Middlebury volleyball team (16-3) snapped Plymouth State's 19-match win streak with a 3-0 road victory on Tuesday evening. Entering the match, the hosts (19-1) were one of just five teams remaining without a loss. The Panthers are back in action this weekend when they head to Williams for the New England Challenge, taking on Springfield on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
The first set was a back-and-forth affair early on, with the score tied eight times before Middlebury was able to take the first two-point advantage (11-8) on a kill by
Maggie Wise. Tied 13-13, the visitors rattled off a 6-1 spurt to take a 19-14 lead. Plymouth State battled back, cutting the deficit to three (24-21), but Middlebury hung on for the 25-21 first set victory.
Tied 16-16 in the second frame, the visitors tallied four of the next five points, taking a 20-17 advantage. The spurt was highlighted by a pair of kills from
Corley Doyle. Plymouth State cut the deficit to one (22-21), but Middlebury closed out the set with a kill from Wise and a pair of service aces from
Jane Nelson for the 25-21 final.
The visitors never trailed in the third set, jumping out to an early 8-3 advantage. Trailing 20-12, Plymouth State crawled its way back, scoring eight of the next nine points to make it 21-20. Middlebury extended its advantage to 23-20 with kills from Wise and
Laney Sullivan, but the hosts wouldn't go away. Plymouth State cut the deficit to one (23-22), but the visitors tallied the final two points to hand the hosts their first loss of the season.
Doyle and Wise led all players with 11 kills apiece, while
Gabbie O'Toole recorded a match-high 34 assists.
Britt Lange had 12 digs during the victory, while
Kelly Ferrero had 11 to go along with three service aces.
Lindsey Sanderson recorded a team-high eight kills for Plymouth State, while Alexa Price had 28 assists and Marissa Plaza dug up 12 balls.
