Men's Tennis Secures NCAA Semifinal Slot

Middlebury advanced to the NCAA semifinals for the 13th time in 17 years after a 5-2 win over fifth-ranked Wesleyan (16-5) in a quarterfinal contest. The sixth-ranked Panthers (17-6) will face #3 Emory in the semifinals on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., with the winner advancing to the NCAA Championship match. Action took place at the Sorensen Courts on the campus of Western Michigan in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Wesleyan earned the first point of the match when Princeton Carter and Jonathan Holtzman picked up an 8-2 win over Noah Farrell and Alex Vanezis at #2 doubles. The lead increased to 2-0 when Noah Lilienthal and Adrian Roji were 8-6 victors over Lubomir Cuba and Peter Martin in the top slot. Middlebury got on the board at #3 when Nate Eazor and Andre Xiao picked up an 8-4 win over Andrew Finkelman and Marcus Sweeney, leaving the Cardinals with a 2-1 lead.

The Panthers quickly overcame their doubles deficit when Eazor eased past Carter 6-0, 6-2 at #5 singles. Middlebury moved into the lead at the conclusion of #2 singles when Farrell downed Anker, 6-4, 6-0. Cuba earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at #1 over Finkelman, before Xiao clinced the match with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Lilienthal at #3.

Adam Guo and Roji had split sets at #4 (2-6-w, 7-5-m), while Stanley Morris took the first set 6-3 at #6 and was trailing 6-5 in the second to Zach Leib.

This was the third meeting this season between the teams, with each squad claiming a victory. The Cardinals defeated Middlebury 6-3 in Vermont on April 6, but the Panthers edged Wesleyan 5-3 in the NESCAC Semifinals.
