Middlebury Men Pick Up Two Wins in California

The second-ranked Panther men's tennis team continued its spring trip through California, picking up a pair of wins on Sunday. Middlebury started the day with an 8-1 win at Occidental, followed by a 7-2 victory against George Fox in a match played at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Middlebury stays unbeaten at 7-0 and returns to the courts on Monday at Division I UC Irvine starting at 3:00 p.m. eastern.

During the match against Occidental (4-7), the doubles tandem of Andre Xiao and Aleksandr Samets started things off with an 8-3 victory at No. 3 over Vincent Bartholomew and Christian Anderson. The top team of Noah Farrell and Peter Martin posted an 8-5 win against Cameron Coe and Lucas Chmielewski. The second duo of Nate Eazor and Alex Vanezis completed the sweep for the Panthers with a narrow 8-6 victory against Joseph Schwarcz and David Zhang.

In singles action, Middlebury rattled off the first five matches to finish. Zach Hilty posted a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6 over Bartholomew, while David Vilys clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph in the fourth slot over Schwarz. The other three wins came from Cole Sutton against Dylan Morison at No. 5 (7-6, 6-2), Vanezis in the second position over David Zhang (6-4, 6-2) and Adam Guo atop the lineup against Chmielewski (6-3, 3-6, 10-3).

The Tigers grabbed their lone point of the match with a narrow straight-set win at No. 3 for the final 8-1 score.

Later in the day against George Fox (5-6), the Panthers against swept the doubles matches as the team of Samets and Xiao won by an 8-5 score in the No. 3 flight against Thierry Van Os and Payton Nemba. At No. 1, Lubomir Cuba and Eazor recorded an 8-7 win over Keaten Baker and Will Leach, while Farrell and Martin earned an 8-6 triumph in the second position against Alex Namba and Luke Lemaitre.

During singles play, Eazor posted a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at No. 5 over Rox Rogers, while Guo clinched the match for the Panthers at No. 6 by scores of 6-4, 6-2 over Van Os. Stanley Morris made the score 6-0 in favor of Middlebury via a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the No. 3 spot against Baker, while Xiao recorded a 6-4, 6-2 win against Namba at No. 4.

The Bruins posted wins in the top-two positions in the lineup for the final 7-2 score.
