Women's Hoops Improves to 12-0 With NESCAC Road Win at Wesleyan

The Middlebury women's basketball team improved to 12-0 on the season and 2-0 in NESCAC play after a 69-57 win at Wesleyan (6-5, 0-2) on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers return to action on Tuesday with a 5:30 p.m. road game at Westfield State.

Middlebury was up 8-5 early on a hoop from Colleen Caveney at the 6:09 mark. The Panthers led by as many as five in the first stanza, never trailing, as they headed into the second quarter with a 16-14 edge.

Leading 24-20 in the second quarter, the Panthers went on a 6-0 run, with four points from Caveney, holding a 30-20 lead with 1:53 on the clock. The hosts scored the final five points of the half, as Middlebury held a 30-25 lead at the break.

The Panthers extended their lead to six (35-29) in the third stanza, before the Cardinals scored 10 of the next 12 points. A basket from Katy O'Connor gave Wesleyan its first lead of the game (39-37) with 3:20 showing. The contest later saw its sixth tie before Middlebury took a 45-43 advantage after three quarters.

Leading 47-45, the visitors went on a 5-0 run with a two and a three from Kira Waldman to go up 52-45 with 8:19 left to play. The Cardinals trimmed the lead to four (53-49), before a decisive 9-0 run put the Panthers ahead 62-49 with 1:31 on the clock. Four different players scored during the run, as the Panther lead remained in double digits for the remainder of the contest.

Caveney led four players in double figures with 15 points, while Maya Davis and Waldman each scored a dozen. Alex Huffman netted 11 points with seven rebounds in the contest for the victors. Betsy Knox grabbed 10 rebounds off the bench to go along with 10 points.

Olivia Gorman paced the Cardinals with 14 points, Caleigh Ryan scored 11, while O'Connor chipped in with 10 off the bench. Tara Berger finished with eight points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Middlebury, who leads the nation in rebounding margin, held a 51-37 edge on the boards.
