A trio of Middlebury men's tennis players participated on day one of the NCAA Singles and Doubles Tournaments on Thursday, highlighted by Lubomir Cuba and Kyle Schlanger with a win in doubles to advance to the quarterfinal round. Noah Farrell along with Cuba also competed in the singles bracket. Matches are being held at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, California.
In a bracket of 16 tandems, the top-seeded pair of Cuba and Schlanger got past the Trinity (Texas) duo of Wilson Lambeth and Jordan Pitts by a 6-2, 6-4 score. The Panther team will play Caltech's Varun Shanker and James Wei on Friday at 6:30 p.m. On Thursday, the Beavers' team defeated the Christopher Newport pair of Justin Cerny and David Reed in three sets (4-6, 6-1, 6-4).
In the singles competition, Cuba, who started the tournament as the No. 2 overall seed, fell to Emory's Jonathan Jemison by scores of 6-1, 6-4 in the first round. The 2017 NCAA Singles Champion and northeast region's third-ranked player, Cuba finishes his second season as a Panther with a 23-7 record and 52-9 mark over two years.
Also competing for the Panthers as an individual was Farrell, who dropped his opening-round match. North Carolina Wesleyan's Sebastian Sikh took the first set of the match 6-4, but Farrell rebounded, taking the second set 6-4. Sikh grabbed the win with a 6-3 decisive set. The northeast region's 10th-ranked individual, Farrell finishes his junior year with a record of 12-12 after posting a 37-5 mark during his first two seasons.
