Middlebury Defense Stifles Colby-Sawyer

Middlebury held Colby-Sawyer to nine second-half points on its way to a 75-30 win over the Chargers (3-3) on Saturday afternoon in Pepin Gym. The Panthers (6-0) return to action on Tuesday at Plattsburgh State, while the Chargers visit Pine Manor on Monday.

Trailing 8-7, Middlebury closed the first quarter on a 15-2 run in the final 4:30, holding a 22-10 lead after 10 minutes. Maya Davis scored six points in the span, with four points from Emily Wander.

The lead grew to 18 (32-14) on a three from Alyna Baharozian at the 4:47 mark, before Colby-Sawyer went on a 7-0 run. Mackenzie Buzzell scored five points in the spurt, making it 32-21 (1:40), before the Panthers took a 34-21 lead into the halftime break.

In the second half, Middlebury's defense took over, holding the Chargers to just 3-28 shooting from the floor and 0-13 from three-point range.

Middlebury scored the first dozen points of the third quarter, taking a 46-21 lead with 5:26 remaining. The Panthers then closed the third session with a 10-0 spurt, holding a 60-27 lead. The hosts outscored their opponent 15-3 in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

Catherine Harrison led Middlebury with 17 points on 6-8 shooting, while grabbing six rebounds. Davis went 5-6 from the floor, netting 13 points with eight boards. Bahorozian pulled down nine caroms, Alex Huffman had eight, while Betsy Knox netted eight.

Lexie Hamilton led Colby-Sawyer with eight points and seven rebounds, while Kristen Donaghey scored seven with seven boards.

The nation's 10th-best defense in field goal percentage held the visitors to .164 shooting (9-55) from the floor. Middlebury, who ranks second nationally in rebounding margin held a 56-31 advantage on the boards.
