Sessions Career Night Leads Panthers Past Conn. College

Behind a career-high tying 23 kills from Isabel Sessions, Middlebury earned its seventh-straight overall win by a 3-1 tally (25-22, 23-25, 25-21, 26-24) at Connecticut College on Friday. The Panthers (10-2, 4-1) return to the court Saturday when travel to Wesleyan for a 2:00 p.m. league contest.

The Camels (5-10, 1-5) moved out to a four-point edge (16-12) in the first set on a kill by Jenny Kellogg. The Panthers clawed their way back into the frame with five of the next six points, knotting the score at 17-17. Tied at 21-21, the visitors tallied four of the last five points, including back-to-back kills from Sessions, to close out the opening set.

Deadlocked at 14-14 in the second set, the Camels utilized a 6-1 run for their largest lead of the frame at 20-15. Middlebury answered with the next four points, including a pair of kills by Maggie Wise, to pull back to within one (20-19). With the frame tied at 23-23, back-to-back kills by the Camels' Avery Light evened the match at a set apiece. The Connecticut College set victory snapped a streak of 19-straight sets won by the Panthers.

With the Panthers owning a 6-2 lead in set number three, the Camels came back to knot the score at 16-16 on a kill by Maddie Rust. Deadlocked at 20-20, Middlebury recorded five of the final six points for a 2-1 advantage.

The final set saw the Panthers race out to a quick 9-1 lead, highlighted by three kills from Wise. The Camels fought all the way back to draw even at 24-24 on a service ace from Katie Howley. Middlebury earned the set win thanks to a Camel service error and kill by Wise secured the set and the match for the Panthers.  

Sessions led the Middlebury attack with 23 kills to go along with a career-best 15 digs, while Wise tallied a season-high 15 kills. Chellsa Ferdinand dished out 47 assists, moving her into ninth place on the career list with 1,082. She surpasses Jordan Lungstrum's '98 total of 1,056.

Gigi Alper ended the evening with 18 digs, while Claire White-Dzuro chipped in with 12. Sarah Staver and Corley Doyle each had four total blocks to lead Middlebury.

Conn. College was led by Light and Kellogg with 16 kills apiece, while Emma Hewlin chipped in with 12. Grace McGee tallied a match-high 52 assists, while Elle Kass dug up a team-best 22 balls. Howley finished with three service aces for the hosts.
