#1 Middlebury Edges #4 Bowdoin in NCAA Title Rematch

The top-ranked Middlebury men's tennis ended its NESCAC weekend in Maine with a 6-3 victory over fourth-ranked Bowdoin (11-2, 3-1) on Saturday at the Pickard Tennis Courts. Middlebury, who improved to 15-1 and 5-0 in the league via its seventh-consecutive win, returns to action next Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. home match against Trinity. Saturday's contest between the Panthers and Polar Bears was a rematch of the 2016 NCAA Championship tilt.

During doubles play, the Panthers secured two of the three points. The No. 1 duo of Lubomir Cuba and William de Quant put the visitors on the scoreboard with an 8-4 win over Bowdoin's Luke Tercek and Grant Urken. At No. 2, Kyle Wolfe and Jerry Jiang tied the match at 1-1 via an 8-5 victory over Hamid Derbani and Kyle Schlanger. The No. 3 flight of Timo van der Geest and Peter Martin edged the Polar Bear tandem of Gil Roddy and Justin Patel by an 8-6 tally, giving Middlebury a 2-1 edge.

In singles action, Urken knotted the match for the hosts at 2-2, winning by set scores of 6-4, 6-4 over de Quant in the second slot. Middlebury claimed the next two points with victories coming from Derbani at No. 3 over Wolfe (6-3, 6-2), while Cuba grabbed a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 triumph against Tercek in the top spot.

Roddy pulled Bowdoin to within one at 4-3 via a 6-4, 6-4 win against van der Geest at No. 5. The Panthers closed the match with Schlanger clinching the match via a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Jiang in the fourth slot, while Allen Jackson needed three sets to get past Luke Carstens at No. 6 (6-2, 4-6, 6-2) for the final 6-3 score.
