The Middlebury men's tennis team continued through its Texas spring break trip with a 7-2 victory Wednesday over #16 Trinity (Texas) at the Butch Newman Tennis Center in San Antonio, Texas. The fourth-ranked Panthers improve to 9-1 and return to the courts on Friday for a 2:00 p.m. match against top-ranked Emory in Austin.
The Panthers took two of the three doubles points against the Tigers (9-6). The tandem of Hamid Derbani and Kyle Schlanger picked up the first point with an 8-4 victory in the second spot over Clayton Niess and Chas Mayer. Allen Jackson and Timo van der Geest made it a 2-0 Panther lead with an 8-6 win at No. 3 against Jordan Pitts and Liam Crawley, while the Panther duo of Lubomir Cuba and William de Quant completed the sweep, fighting back from a 6-1 deficit, for a 9-7 victory over Matt Tyer and Wilson Lambeth in the top spot.
During singles action, Schlanger picked up the Panthers' fourth point with a 6-2, 6-0 score at No. 4 against Crawley. The Tigers earned their two points when Mayer won by default over Cuba in the top spot, ahead by scores of 6-3 and 5-4, while Pitts edged Derbani at No. 3 (6-4, 6-4).
In the No. 2 flight, de Quant tallied the match-clinching team point for Middlebury, battling back from a set down for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Lambeth. The final two points for the Panthers came in straight sets from van der Geest over McKenna Fujitani at No. 5 (6-2, 6-1) and Jackson in the sixth spot against Niess (6-2, 7-5).
