Middlebury Drops NESCAC Road Game at Hamilton

The Middlebury women's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end, falling 68-62 at Hamilton (9-9, 2-4) on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers 14-4, 4-2) return to action on Tuesday when they host Keene State at 5:30 p.m.

The Panthers held a 7-3 lead on a lay-up by Alex Huffman with 3:59 remaining in the first quarter, taking a 15-12 lead after 10 minutes of play.

Leading 17-16 with 6:36 remaining in the second quarter, Middlebury went on a 7-0 run, taking a 24-16 lead on a jumper from Colleen Caveney at the 3:10 mark. Hamilton came within three (24-21) before the Panthers took a 27-22 advantage into the intermission.

Hamilton trailed 25-21 in the third quarter when an 8-0 run gave the hosts their first lead of the game (33-32) on a three from Halie Serbent with 6:11 left. The Panthers later trailed 35-34 before going on a 7-0 spurt to go ahead 41-35 on a hoop from Betsy Knox with 2:30 on the clock. The Continentals scored the six of the final eight points of the quarter and trailed 43-41 heading into the final 10 minutes.

Neither team led by more than five through the first half of the fourth quarter. With the game tied at 54-54 at the 3:19 mark, Hamilton's Caroline Barrett and Carly O'Hern hit back-to-back threes to put their team on top 60-54 just 36 seconds later. The Panthers cut the lead to five, but could get no closer, as the Continentals sunk 7-8 free throws down the stretch.

Huffman led Middlebury in scoring with a career-high 18 points to go along with four steals, while Caveney netted a dozen with three steals and a pair of blocks. Knox scored 10 points, Kira Waldman finished with seven points and eight rebounds, while Catherine Harrison grabbed a game-high nine boards to go along with six points.

Serbent led all scorers with 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds, Barrett scored 15, while Lauren Getman netted 12 for the hosts.
