Panthers Run Win Streak to Five With Blanking of Conn. College

The fourth-ranked Middlebury men's tennis team ran its winning streak to five straight with a 9-0 NESCAC road victory Sunday over Connecticut College (3-13, 0-6) in matches played at the South Street Courts in New London, Connecticut. The Panthers (12-2, 8-0) return to the courts for the final weekend of the regular season with a Saturday match against Trinity at 1:00 p.m.

Middlebury shuffled its lineup in both singles and doubles, allowing players to compete in different flights. The third Panther tandem of Kyle Schlanger and William de Quant secured the first point against the Camels with an 8-0 victory over Patrick Farrell and Johnny Cissel. In the top spot, Hamid Derbani and Palmer Campbell gave the Panthers their second point with an 8-3 win over Jonathan Kraiger and Will Cannon, while the team of Noah Farrell and Ari Smolyar posted an 8-2 triumph in the second flight over Daniel Maffa and Charlie Williams to complete the sweep.

In singles play, the Panthers were victorious in straight sets during five of the six matches. At #2, de Quant gave the visitors a 4-0 lead via a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Williams, while Campbell clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Kraiger in the top flight.

In the third spot, Schlanger tallied a 6-1, 6-1 win over Maffa, while Timo van der Geest gave the Panthers a 7-0 advantage with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph at #4 over Cannon. Jack Welch posted his first victory of the season in dual matches with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 win against Ethan Hecker at #6, while Cole Sutton completed the scoring with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Ben Sachs in the fifth flight.
