Men's Tennis Falls to #4 CMS to Finish Spring Trip

Third-ranked Middlebury fell by a 6-3 score Saturday evening to #4 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in a rematch of the 2015 NCAA Championship men's tennis title contest. The Panthers conclude their spring trip to the west coast with a 7-2 record and will return to action Saturday with a NESCAC tilt at #9 Williams beginning at 11:00 a.m.

During doubles action, the Stags' #1 team of Skyler Butts and Daniel Morkovine were the first off the court with an 8-3 victory over Ari Smolyar and Noah Farrell. Middlebury's Palmer Campbell and Hamid Derbani tied the match at 1-1 with an 8-3 win at #2 against Glenn Hull and Lestter Yeh. The Panthers took a 2-1 lead headed to singles with an 8-6 triumph at #3 by Timo van der Geest and Kyle Schlanger over Max Macey and Bryan Mehall.

In singles, Morkovine squared the match at 2-2 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at #3 over Campbell, while Patrick Wildman gave CMS a 3-2 lead with a 6-3, 6-3 win against van der Geest in the sixth spot. In a flight featuring a pair of top-five nationally-ranked individuals, Farrell recorded a 6-1, 7-5 triumph over Butts to knot the match at three points all.  

The Stags posted the last three points all in three sets for the team victory. Yeh got past Derbani at #5 (1-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2), while Hull clipped Smolyar by scores of 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-2 in the second flight. Macey completed the scoring with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) at #4 against de Quant.
