Middlebury Rallies Past Trinity for 11-10 OT Victory

Middlebury's Tim Giarrusso scored with 54 seconds left in overtime as the men's lacrosse team earned an 11-10 NESCAC road win at Trinity on Saturday. The 10th-ranked Panthers erased a four-goal deficit in the fourth quarter, while Giarrusso's goal extended the team's winning streak to five straight. Middlebury (9-4, 6-2) returns to the field next Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. conference game at Colby.

The Panthers netted the only goal in the opening 15 minutes of the game when Jack Rautiola scored on a feed from Jon Broome, extending Broome's point streak to 12-straight games.

The Bantams (3-9, 1-7) started quickly in the second quarter, scoring nine seconds into the period on a goal by Seth Bird. Trinity used the goal to start a five-goal run to with Bird setting up Ben Knaus with 10:28 on the clock as the hosts took their first lead of the game. John Caraviello made it a 3-1 game and consecutive goals from Ryan DeSimone extended the difference to four goals.

Middlebury halted the Bantam run on a goal by Jack Gould, when he reached the 20-goal plateau with an unassisted marker. The goal came with 5:29 left in the quarter and the score remained 5-2 when the teams reached halftime.

Giarrusso got Middlebury off to a good start in the third quarter, scoring 2:12 into the new half. Three minutes later, Gould picked up his second of the game cutting the difference to one goal (5-4).

The Bantams responded with three-straight goals, but the Panthers added one more before the end of the quarter. Giarrusso scored with 26 seconds left making it an 8-5 Trinity lead with 15 minutes left to play.

In the fourth, Knaus pushed the lead to four goals after 1:30 had expired, but Middlebury stormed back with five-straight goals. Giarrusso picked up the first two of the run, while Henry Riehl closed the gap to one goal (9-8) with 5:07 left in regulation. Giarrusso tied the game with 4:14 on the clock and Kyle Soroka gave the Panthers the lead just over a minute later.

Trinity tied the score at 10-10 on a goal by Michael McQuiston with 2:17 remaining to force overtime.

Each team had at least one possession in overtime, but Giarrusso netted the game winner from in tight on the right side of the crease after taking a feed from Riehl. The winning possession was set up by a key ground ball by Middlebury's Jack DeFrino.

Giarrusso scored six times for the Panthers and took over the team lead in goals with 25. Gould contributed a pair of scores, while Riehl had a goal and an assist. John Jackson went 15-25 at the faceoff X and scooped up six ground balls. Will Ernst finished with 11 saves earning the win.

Bird paced the Bantam attack with five points (2g 3a), while DeSimone scored three times and Knaus scored twice and set up another. Scott Morgan collected five ground balls and Henry Coote made 21 saves in goal.

The Panthers held a 57-34 advantage in shots and also led in ground balls, 30-26.
