Panthers Fall at Bates to Conclude Maine Weekend Trip

The Panther swimming and diving teams wrapped up their weekend trip to Maine with a dual meet on Sunday at Bates. The men fell to the host Bobcats by a 183-111 score in Tarbell Pool, while the women were defeated 201-99. Middlebury returns to action Saturday when it hosts Union for a dual meet starting at 1:00 p.m.

On the men's side, the Panthers recorded three individual event victories. Picking up two wins was distance freestyler Michael McGean. He won the 1,650 free (16:28.34) and 500 free (4:50.21) events, while Andrew Rosenthal was second to McGean in the 1,650 (17:19.52) and third in the 500 free (5:00.02), respectively.

The other event victory was tallied by Stephan Koenigsberger in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.20), while the fourth-year Panther earned a runner-up finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.98).

Runner-up efforts in the pool came from Connor McCormick in the 200 free (1:47.84), Brendan Leech in both the 100 back (54.59) and the 200 back (2:01.42) and Jack Dowling during the 200 fly (2:03.93). Additional second-place showings came from Bryan Cheuk in the 50 free (22.12) and Morgan Matsuda as a part of the 400 individual medley (4:23.03) event.

The final swimming event for the men saw the Panther quartet of Cheuk, Paul Lagasse, Jack McLaughlin and Leech finish as the runner-up in the 200 free relay (1:28.51).

On the diving board, Will Greene earned his third and fourth event titles of the weekend following his two wins Saturday at Colby. He recorded 221.15 points to win the 1-meter competition, tallying 219.55 points for the 3-meter crown.

During women's action, Isabel Wyer tallied two individual wins, while Morgan Burke also earned a title. Wyer was victorious in the 200 free (1:56.23) and the 200 back (2:09.21), while Burke beat the field to the wall in the 100 free (54.92). The latter also posted a runner-up finish in the 50 free with a mark of 25.30.

A pair of Panthers tallied runner-up times as Lucy Scott stopped the clock second in the 1,650 free (18:07.14), while Sarah Bartholomae touched with a time of 1:01.86 during the 100 back.

During the final event of the meet, the Middlebury 200 free relay quartet of Burke, Wyer, Megan Griffin and Stephanie Andrews touched the wall ahead of the field with a time of 1:40.66.

Elissa DeNunzio fared well for the Panthers in the diving events, finishing second on the 1-meter board (202.85) and third during the 3-meter (208.80).
