Middlebury men's tennis players Peter Heidrich and Palmer Campbell fell in the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Tournament on Saturday afternoon to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Joe Dorn and Warren Wood in straight sets. The match was contested at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio. Despite the loss, the Panther duo concludes the season with an impressive 20-8 record.
The semifinal match on Saturday marked the third time this season the two teams have met this season. Heidrich and Campbell edged Dorn and Wood by an 8-6 score on March 27 during Middlebury's spring break trip, while the CMS tandem posted an 8-3 victory in Wednesday's NCAA Championship match between the Panthers and Stags.
In Saturday's back-and-forth opening set, the duos held serve as Wood and Dorn led 4-3. The CMS tandem won the next two games and took the opening set, 6-3.
During the second set, both teams held serve as the CMS team held a 2-1 edge. The Stags posted three-straight game wins for a 5-1 lead. Serving to stay in the match, Heidrich and Campbell were able to save multiple match points and pulled to within three at 5-2. The Stags held serve and moved on to the final with a 6-2 win.
