Late Charge Propels Colby Past Middlebury

Middlebury's Elizabeth Knox scored 27 points, but visiting Colby utilized a 9-0 run in the final minutes of the second half on its way to a 66-60 win over Middlebury on Senior Night in Pepin Gymnasium. The Panthers (11-10, 3-4) return to action Sunday when they host Bowdoin at 3:00 p.m., while the Mules (15-6, 4-4) travel to play Husson on Tuesday.

The teams traded baskets in the opening minutes of the contest as the Mules took a 6-4 lead on a three-pointer from Caitlyn Nolan at the 15:30 mark. The Panthers rattled off the next 10 points during a stretch of 3:05, including a trio of baskets from Knox, and raced out 14-6.

Colby responded with an 11-0 run of its own, capped off on a put-back by Haley Driscoll and led 17-14 with 7:37 left in the half. Over the next 5:45 of action, the game went back and forth as neither team held more than a two-point advantage.

With the contest tied at 22-22 and 1:52 remaining, a layup from Sabrina Weeks and a three-pointer by Siobhan O'Sullivan on back-to-back Middlebury possessions gave the Panthers a five-point edge with 39 ticks left. Colby's Marykate Caverly scored a layup on the Mules' final possession of the half via a nifty pass from Mia Diplock, as the Panthers went to the locker room with a 27-24 lead. The opening 20 minutes featured three ties and nine lead changes.

Out of the break, Colby tallied eight of the opening 12 points and grabbed a 32-31 lead with 15:55 left. That advantage grew to five (42-37) on a layup by Diplock with 11:31 left. The Panthers responded with five-consecutive points by Knox on a three and a jumper, tying the contest at 42-42. Over the next seven minutes of play, the lead changed hands three times as neither team could pull away.

With 3:42 showing on the clock, O'Sullivan gave Middlebury its final lead of the game at 52-50. From that point on, Colby scored nine-straight points and cruised to the win. In the final 1:03, the Mules sealed the win knocking down 7-8 free throw attempts.

Knox scored her game-high 27 on 11-22 shooting and added a game-best nine rebounds, while Sarah Kaufman chipped in with 11 points, six rebounds and four assists. Holly Lanchantin also added six boards for the Panthers.

Caverly paced five Mules in double figures with 16 points, while Diplock added 14. Carylanne Wolfington and Nolan each added 12, while Driscoll finished with 10 and four helpers.
