Box Score The Middlebury women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 61-58 win over Hartwick at the Holiday Inn Classic hosted by Oneonta. The Panthers return to action on Tuesday night at Johnson State.
The game was back and forth until early in the second period when Hartwick went on a 9-0 run to take a 26-15 lead with 4:24 remaining. The Panthers answered with a 7-0 spurt of their own to come within three at 28-25 at the halftime break.
Middlebury took the lead at the 6:02 mark of the third period when Colleen Caveney connected to put her team up 33-31. Hartwick came back with a 7-0 run to go on top 38-33 at the 3:38 mark. The momentum switched back once again when the Panthers answered with an 8-2 spurt, taking a 41-40 lead on a bucket from Caveney with 57 seconds left in the third period.
The fourth period was a see-saw battle, as the game saw its eighth tied at 58-58 with 1:11 remaining. The Panthers went up by one on a free throw from Sarah Kaufman with 48 seconds left. On the other end of the floor, Catherine Harrison blocked a Hartwick shot to take the lead with 27 seconds left before grabbing the rebound. The Panthers took some time off the clock and then sealed the game when Harrison scored with six seconds left to make it a 61-58 final.
After scoring a dozen in her first career game, Harrison finished with 20 points and nine rebounds on 9-20 shooting from the floor. Caveney finished with 12 points on 6-7 shooting, while Kaufman scored 10. Alex Huffman grabbed eight rebounds in the game to go along with her six points. Middlebury finished the game shooting 48 percent from the floor.
Taylor Vonasek led Hartwick with 19 points, while Caitlin Corbett and Christina Graziadei each netted 13.
