Kaufman's 23 Points, Strong Defense Lead Middlebury to Season-Opening Win

Sarah Kaufman scored a team-high 23 points and the Panther defense limited host Oneonta to just 18.7 percent (14-75) shooting for the game as part of a 60-38 victory. The win came as part of the Holiday Inn Classic hosted by the Red Dragons. Middlebury returns to action on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against Hartwick.

Kaufman's 23 points on 9-19 shooting led three Panthers in double figures. She also dished out six assists while connecting on three shots from beyond the arc. Catherine Harrison recorded a double-double during the first half of her initial collegiate game en route to 12 points and a game-high 15 boards.  Sabrina Weeks also finished with a double-double with 11 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.

Lyteshia Price recorded her second-straight double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead Oneonta.

The Panthers led by a 14-9 score after the first period, stretching its lead to 11 points in the second period on two occasions before the Red Dragons closed the deficit to 27-22 at the half.

Out of the break, Oneonta cut Middlebury's lead to three, but a 7-0 run got the Panthers back to a 10-point bulge (39-29) capped by a three-pointer by Kaufman with 4:13 remaining in the third period.

The Red Dragons pulled back to within single digits, but the Panthers closed the period with six unanswered points via two buckets by Kaufman sandwiched around a Weeks' layup and lead 45-33 at the end of the third.

The Panthers continued to build their lead in the fourth period, grabbing a 53-35 advantage midway through the final stanza on a Harrison free throw. Middlebury led by as many as 24 points with 1:15 remaining.

Middlebury limited Oneonta to just 18.7 percent shooting for the game (14-75), while the Panthers knocked down 41.7 percent of their shots (25-60). The visitors controlled the glass with a 58-40 rebound advantage to go along with five blocks.
