Panther Swim Teams Begin Second Semester With Wins Over Colby

The Panther swimming and diving teams opened their second semester with convincing home dual meet wins Saturday afternoon against Colby. The women were victorious by a 199.5-84.5 score, while the men cruised 206-83. Middlebury returns to action next weekend when it travels to Springfield for a dual meet Saturday at 1:00 p.m., and return home Sunday for a matchup with Bates at 11:00 a.m.

During the women's competition, the Panthers won 12 of the 16 events that were contested. The Middlebury quartet of Sarah Bartholomae, Ann Carpenter, Megan Griffin and Morgan Burke touched the wall ahead of the field in the day's opening event, the 200 medley relay, with a time of 1:51.17.

Individually, Jamie Hillas picked up two event victories for the Panthers. She won the 50 breaststroke in a time of 30.23, while she claimed the 100 freestyle title in 53.87.

Other event wins came from Caitlin Carroll in the 1000 free (11:09.14), Claire Treesh in the 50 back (30.26), Lydia Carpenter in the 50 free (24.87) and Bartholomae in the 100 back (1:03.16). Additionally, Jennifer Koide won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:11.88, while Kelly Delane notched the win in the 500 free (5:24.27) as the Panthers grabbed the top-four spots.

On the diving board, Adrianna Baker was also a double-winner. She won the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 207.00 points, while she claimed the 3-meter event with 219.75 markers.

In the final event of the meet, the team of Hillas, Lydia Carpenter, Griffin and Courtney Haron won the race to the wall with a time of 1:40.91 in the 200 free relay.

On the men's side, the team matched the women's output with 12 wins in the 16 events. The team of Justin Cho, Stephan Koenigsberger, Bryan Cheuk and Paul Lagasse began the meet with a winning time of 1:38.43 in the 200 medley relay.

Individually, Connor McCormick, Cho and Cheuk each picked up two events. McCormick won the 1000 free (10:05.82) and the 100 breaststroke (1:03.93), Cho was victorious during the 50 back (25.97) and the 100 back (56.59), while Cheuk won the 50 free (21.88) and 50 fly (24.23).

Event victories were also posted by Matthew Lantin in the 200 free (1:44.99), Andrew Lee in the 50 breaststroke (28.65), Alex Smith in the 100 fly (53.94) by just .01 over Koenigsberger, Michael McGean during the 500 free (4:51.48) and Andrew Grant in the 100 individual medley (56.94).

The 200 free relay team of Cheuk, Jack McLaughlin, Taylor Moore and Lagasse capped off the meet with a winning mark of 1:29.48.
