Champions Crowned at ITA Men's Tennis New England Regional

Champions have been crowned at the 2014 USTA/ITA Men's Tennis Regional Championship hosted by Middlebury College. The winners advance to the Small College Championships at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina from October 9-12, 2014.

Amherst's Michael Solimano won the men's singles title, defeating Steven Chen of Wesleyan, 6-2, 6-0. All six of Solimano's victories came in straight sets, while his semifinal win over Michael Liu of Wesleyan, came when Liu was forced to retire towards the end of the second set. Chen advanced to the finals with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Middlebury's Jackson Frons. Frons picked up a quartet of wins to reach the semifinals, including three victories over seeded players. 

Additional Panthers who tallied wins during the event were Noah Farrell, Ari Smolyar and Allen Jackson. Farrell, seeded #6, worked his way through to the quarterfinal round with a trio of straight-set triumphs before falling to Chen. Smolyar picked up a pair of straight-set wins in his first two matches. In his round of 16 match, he battled back from a set down before falling to Pierre Planche of Bates by set scores of 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (3). 

In his first match, Jackson edged past Luke Terceck of Bowdoin (6-4, 7-5), but Anton Zykov of Amherst edged past Jackson in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0 in the round of 32.

In doubles play, Christopher Ellis and Pierre Planche took home the title with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) victory over Aaron Revzin and Michael Solimano of Amherst. Ellis/Planche advanced to the finals with an 8-6 win over Jake Roberts and Sam Rudovsky of Wesleyan. Michael Arguello and Jeff Cherkin of Brandeis fell to Revzin/Solimano 8-4 in their semifinal match.

For Middlebury, the duos of Smolyar and Courtney Mountifield along with Palmer Campbell and Kyle Schlanger both made it through to the quarterfinal round before bowing out. Also, the tandem of Chris Frost and Peter Heidrich picked up a victory in the bracket.
