Women's Basketball Beaten By Nationally-Ranked Bowdoin

On Senior Day at Pepin Gym, Bowdoin broke an early 6-6 tie with a 14-0 run and never looked back, running away from the Panthers for a 92-55 NESCAC victory. The 22nd-ranked Polar Bears (19-3, 6-2), who never trailed in the contest, connected on 19-33 shots from the floor in the first half, making 7-11 three-pointers. In contrast, Middlebury (7-14, 1-7) hit on just 10-28 field goal attempts, and was just  3-13 from behind the arc, as Bowdoin took a commanding 55-30 lead into the break.

After a pair of free throws by Sarah Marcus knotted the game at six-apiece at 17:11, the Polar Bears started their run. Following a pair of buckets started the run, Kirsten Prue and Selena Lorrey each knocked down a three-pointer, while two more baskets bookended the 14-0 burst. Six different players scored during the run, giving Bowdoin a 20-6 lead at 13:43.

Middlebury used an 8-2 run to counter, as Laura Lowry knocked down consecutive treys, cutting the deficit to 23-14 with just under 12 minutes left in the half. Lorrey answered with a three of her own, returning the Polar Bears lead to double-digits. Later, the lead bulged to 27 points in the half as Lorrey knocked down her fourth long-ball of the half, giving the visitors a commanding 55-28 lead in the final seconds before Lowry knocked down a jumper to cap the first half scoring.

In the second half Bowdoin maintained its sharp shooting, connecting on 14-26 shots, netting 24 of their 37 second-half points from the paint. The Polar Bear defense kept up the pressure, holding the hosts to 9-30 shooting, on their way to the 92-55 win.

Sara Binkhorst led all scorers with 16 points, adding 8-9 from the charity stripe, while Lorrey finished with 14 points off the bench, as the reserve connected on 5-9 from the field and 4-8 from downtown. Shannon Brady and Anna Prohl each finished with 11 points, while Megan Phelps chipped in with eight rebounds and five assists, both game-highs.

Lowry finished with eight points, all in the first half, while Elizabeth Knox added 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Scarlett Kirk also finished with 10 points, adding six rebounds. Over her last four games, Kirk collected 53 caroms for the Panthers.
