The Middlebury cross country teams competed Saturday in the NCAA New England Regional hosted by Williams College at Mt. Greylock Regional High School. The third-ranked women's team raced to runner-up team honors, scoring 65 points behind only champion and fourth-ranked MIT's 40, and automatically qualified as a team for the NCAA Championships hosted by Wilmington College in southwestern Ohio. The 12th-ranked men finished fifth with 136 points and hope to gain an at-large berth to next Saturday's national meet.
In the women's race, Alison Maxwell and Summer Spillane led the Middlebury squad to the finish line as all five Panther scorers picked up all-region honors. Maxwell garnered the runner-up spot with a 6K time of 21:48.9 out of 387 runners who participated. Spillane was right behind in a fourth-place time of 21:54.2, while Adrian Walsh posted a time of 22:17.2, good for 12th. Katie Carlson stopped the clock in 22:27.7 for 16th place, while Erzie Nagy rounded out the scorers with a 31st-place effort of 22:47.3.
For the men, three Panthers earned all-region laurels. Wilder Schaaf completed the 8K run and was the team's top finisher in 25:40.9 for 10th place. Kevin Wood was just under two seconds behind with a time of 25:42.7 and placed 14th. Sebastian Matt also collected an all-region nod with a 25th-place showing in 26:04.8. Also scoring for Middlebury were Jacob Fox in 37th (26:24.2) and Sam Cartwright in 50th (26:39.4) out of 373 runners.
