Swim Teams Host Invitational

The Middlebury College swimming and diving teams hosted their annual invitational meet, with Williams, Amherst and Springfield in town to compete against the Panthers. Several Middlebury athletes turned in top performances, with three different relay teams winning events.

The women's team won both the 200 free relay (1:41.08) and the 400 medley relay (3:58.24) events. First-year swimmer Meredith White (Orinda, Calif.) along with classmates Ann and Lydia Carpenter (Arlington, Va.) and sophomore Alexandra Edel (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) comprised the 200 free squad. Making up the 400 medley team were junior Nora Daly (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), sophomore Andrea Tibbetts (Dover, Mass.) and rookies Jamie Hillas (Woodbridge, Conn.) and Maddy Berkman (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.). Earning a second place finish was the 400 free relay team of White, Loftus, senior Katherine Loftus, (Madison, Conn.) and sophomore Maddie Gilbert (Woodstock, Vt.), who finished with a time of 3:42.53.

Berkman was a winner in the 200 IM, taking home the title with a time of 2:10.58. Tibbetts placed second in the 200 backstroke (2:09.31), junior Salena Casha (Andover, Mass.) was third in the 200 IM (2:14.15), while Loftus came in third in the 1,650 free (18:01.13). Picking up a win in the 400 IM was Edel in 4:40.12, followed closely by rookie Jamie Hillas (Woodbridge Conn.) in second (4:41.39).

The men's 400 free relay team of senior Nick Daly (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), sophomore Patrick Li (Bethesda, Md.), junior Ethan Litman (Bethesda, Md.) and rookie James Wing (Indian Head Park, Ill.) won their event with a time of 3:12.48. Placing second was the 400 medley relay team comprised of Daly, Wing, senior Kazu Asaga (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and rookie Chris Vandiford (Springfield, Ohio), earning a time of 3:37.55.

First-year racer Teddy Kuo (Bayside, N.Y.) placed second in the 200 fly (1:58.78), sophomore Nick Keenan (Queensbury, N.Y.) came in second in the 200 IM (4:15.26), while Wing came in third in the 100 free (48.87). Also with top five finishes were Vandiford in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.17) and Asaga in the 100 fly (52.88).
