The Middlebury men's tennis team saw its season come to an end with a tight 5-1 loss to Amherst in the NCAA Quarterfinals. The Panthers finish their season with a 21-3 record, second-most wins in school history. The match took place at the Biszanta Family Tennis Center and was hosted by Claremont McKenna.
Middlebury dug itself a hole early, facing a 3-0 deficit after doubles play. The Panthers quickly fell down 4-0 after a 6-2, 6-0 loss by Eliot Jia to Wes Waterman at #6 singles. Middlebury then mounted a comeback as Peter Odell was a 6-3, 7-6 winner over Priit Gross in the #5 slot. Andrew Thomson dropped a three set (6-4, 5-7, 6-1) match to Austin Chafetz at #2, as the Jeffs took the match by a score of 5-1. Andrew Lee was up a set at #3, while Andy Peters (#4) and Conrad Olson (#1) were in the third set when the match was decided.
Singles play will on Friday as Olson will compete in the NCAA singles championship, while Thomson/David Farah will battle in doubles play. Thomson is also an alternate and may see action in singles play.
