Men's Tennis Impressive At Cornell Invit.

9/25/05 - The Middlebury College men's tennis team continued to impress as they turned in some great performances at the Cornell Invitational. The Panthers were the only Division III school competing at the eight-team event.

For the second straight week, seniors Nate Edmunds (Birmingham, Mich.) and Brian Waldron (Rye, N.Y.) advanced to a tournament final, but did not compete for the title. Both tournaments ran long, so the two decided not to compete.

In the "B" flight, junior George Mayer (Merion, Pa.) advanced to the championship before falling 6-2, 7-5. In "C" singles, sophomore Salih Unsal (Gerrads Crossing, England) was eliminated in the semifinals by a score of 7-6, 6-2. In other singles action, senior Jeff Oldenburg (Jacksonville, Fla.) won the "D" consolation bracket by a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles action, Waldron and senior Ari Beilin (Hamilton, Mass.) lost in the "A" finals, 9-8 (5), while Mayer/Oldenberg fell 9-7 in the semifinals of flight "B".
