10/2/05 - The Panther men's tennis team placed six players in the quarterfinal round of the ITA New England Tennis Championships hosted by Williams College. Middlebury dominated both singles and doubles play, coming away with both championships.
In singles play, senior Brian Waldron (Rye, N.Y.) defeated his teammate, rookie Conrad Olson (Waterloo, Belgium) in the quarterfinals, 7-6, 7-5. In other quarterfinal action, senior Ari Beilin (Hamilton, Mass.) defeated sophomore Salih Unsal (Gerrads Crossing, England) 6-3, 6-4, while senior Nate Edmunds (Birmingham, Mich.) topped junior George Mayer (Merion, Pa.), 6-2, 6-0. Waldron defeated Beilin 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 in one semifinal, while Edmunds advanced by a score of 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. Edmunds defaulted the singles title to Waldron, after Edmunds and his partner, junior Kevin Bergesen (Beverly, Mass.), had won the doubles title, 8-4. By doing so, he allowed all three to qualify for the 2005 ITA National Small College Championships, which is scheduled for October 13-16th, 2005 at Florida Gulf Coast University, in Fort Myers, Florida.
In other doubles action, Waldron/Beilin defeated Unsal/Mayer in the semifinals 8-1, while Edmunds/Bergesen advanced with an 8-4 victory.
