9/19/04 - The Middlebury College men's tennis team continued to look very good early in the season as they were the only Division III team to take part in the Cornell Fall Invitational Tournament. The Panthers won two of four singles flights, while boasting the runner-up in the other three flights.

In the "A" singles bracket, junior Nathan Edmunds (Birmingham, Mich.) won three matches before falling 6-1, 6-1 in the championship match. Junior Ari Beilin (S. Hamilton, Mass.) was impressive in the "B" singles flight as he won three straight-set matches before earning the title with a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (3) win in the final. Sophomore George Mayer (Merion, Pa.) also won a pair of matches in the bracket before falling in the semifinals. In flight "C", sophomore Alex Scott (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) won three very closely contested matches before falling in the finals, 6-0, 3-0 (retired). First-year player Salih Unsal (Gerrards Crossing, England) won three matches to advance to the finals in flight "D", before capturing the title 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. Sophomore Kevin Bergesen (Beverly, Mass.) won a pair of matches in the flight, before being eliminated in the semifinals.

In doubles action, Beilin/Scott advanced to the semi's of flight "A" with two wins, before defaulting in the semifinals due to an injury. Mayer and senior Justin Ingoglia (N. Caldwell, N.J.) won three matches to advance to the finals before falling 8-1.
