5/13/04 - Middlebury will play in the NCAA Championship of Division III Men's Tennis after a 4-1 win over defending NCAA Champion Emory. The Panthers will take on NESCAC rival Williams in the championship match at 1:00 p.m. Friday on the campus of Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. The win avenges a loss to Emory in last year's NCAA semifinals.
Middlebury won the first doubles match completed in the morning as Ari Beilin and Alex Scott were 8-4 winners. Emory evened the doubles score with an 8-6 win over George Mayer and Justin Ingoglia. In the third and deciding match in doubles play, Nathan Edmunds and Brian Waldron held on for the 8-5 win to give Middlebury a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Waldron won 6-1, 7-5 at #2, while Scott fell 6-2, 6-1 in the #6 slot. Leading 2-1, Edmunds gave the Panthers a 3-1 lead with a 6-3, 6-3 win in the #1 singles slot. Beilin and Mayer were in tight matches at #3 and #4, with Ingoglia going to a third set after falling 6-1 and coming back to pick up a 6-4 win in the second set. Ingoglia came on strong, winning 6-2 in the third set to end the match and give Middlebury a 4-1 win. (photo gallery)
