Parmelly graduated from UC Santa Cruz in 2005 with a degree in psychology.

As a player, he and his team had numerous accomplishments throughout his four years, including the NCAA Team Title his senior season. His team reached the finals of the ITA National Indoor Championships twice (2002, 2005), and in each of his four seasons the Slugs never ended their season with a national ranking lower than fifth.

His singles career consisted of multiple wins over top 25 nationally-ranked players, and he was named an All-American in doubles as a senior. He was a part of a doubles team that won the ITA West Regional Tournament in 2004, eventually reaching the finals of the ITA National Small College Championships and garnering a #2 national ranking.

As an assistant at UC Santa Cruz from 2005-10 under Bob Hansen, the Slugs won four NCAA team titles. UC Santa Cruz won the ITA National Indoor Team Championships in 2007 and 2010, and was a finalist in 2006 and 2008. In 2007 and 2009, the Slugs finished the season as the top-ranked team, taking home the NCAA title both years. Parmelly helped mentor numerous single and doubles national title winners along with eight singles and 12 doubles All-American selections. In 2010, he was awarded ITA Assistant Coach of the Year for the West Region.

Parmelly was the head coach at UC Santa Cruz from 2011-13. He graduated multiple singles and doubles All-American selections, finishing in the top 15 nationally as a team both seasons.
