Middlebury College

The Middlebury football team bent but refused to break on Saturday against Bowdoin, shutting out the Polar Bears and forcing four interceptions during a 16-0 defensive battle.
 
HIGHLIGHTS

• Following a three-and-out during its initial possession, Bowdoin drove to the Panther 25-yard line. The Middlebury defense stood tall deep in its own territory as Brady Phillips stood up Sean Ramos short of the first-down line to force a turnover.
• During the next drive, Cutler Hobin stepped in front of a Soren Hummel pass deep in Bowdoin territory and flipped the field with a return to the five. 
• The Polar Bears returned the favor on third-and-goal, as AJ Muse secured an interception in the end zone to keep Middlebury off the scoreboard.
• Bowdoin nearly grabbed the lead with 11:03 left in the second stanza, but a 42-yard field goal attempt from Caden Perry missed wide right.
• Following defensive stands on both sides, the Panthers sprinted down the field with a 12-play, 67-yard drive that spanned 1:52 of action. Yaseen Mousa capped the effort, splitting the uprights from 30 yards for a 3-0 lead at the break.
• With each team unable to find its offensive stride, Carson Eutsay changed the narrative and momentum with 9:17 showing on the third-quarter clock. The linebacker picked off a Hummel toss at the Middlebury 30, racing down the sideline with a convoy of blockers for a 70-yard touchdown. Mousa booted through the extra point for a 10-0 advantage.
• Following a quick Bowdoin possession, the visitors produced a methodical drive that covered 80 yards on 12 plays and 4:53 of action. Quarterback Aidan Moss connected with Jordan Angstreich on the right side of the end zone to increase the lead to 16-0 with 3:16 remaining.
• Bowdoin looked to cut into the deficit early in the fourth quarter. Hummel guided the hosts to the Middlebury 43, but Charlie Grant read his eyes and raced in front of the receiver for the pick.
• After a quick possession, the Panther defense came up with a stop. Hummel guided the Polar Bears down to the opponents' five on a 10-play drive, but Eutsay leapt and secured his second interception of the contest to seal the 16-0 victory.

NOTES

• Angstreich recorded a touchdown for the third straight game, posting a score in both contests this fall and the final one last season.
• Connor McClellan finished with 135 all-purpose yards, rushing for 84 and picking up 51 through the air. He eclipsed 100 total yards in a contest for the 10th time in his career.
• Eutsay's 70-yard interception return marks the longest since Dan Pierce rambled 79 yards on October 25, 2014 against Trinity.
• Matt Shaw paced the defense with 12 tackles and 10 solo stops alongside two tackles-for-loss, while James Woodward posted a season-best seven.
• Hobin's pick was the first of his career, while Grant's was his fifth. Grant tallied a pair of pass breakups in the secondary. 
• Head coach Doug Mandigo earned his 20th victory at Middlebury, running his record to 20-9.
• The programs played for the 31st time with the Panthers owning a 23-7-1 advantage in a series that began in 1916. Middlebury has won the last 12 meetings dating back to the 2012 season. 

The Panthers return to action on Saturday when they host Colby for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
