Middlebury has announced the hiring of
Patrick Madden as an assistant football coach who will work with the inside linebackers. Madden joins the Panthers after serving as the defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Norwich University for the last two seasons.
Â
"Patrick Madden is a fantastic addition to our staff," said Michael G. Heinecken Head Coach of Football Doug Mandigo '96. "He is an extremely bright guy who brings a ton of coaching and recruiting experience to our program while also having a substantial amount of knowledge of the NESCAC landscape after being both a player and coach in the conference."
"I am excited to be a part of Coach Mandigo's coaching staff," said Madden. "I am looking forward to working with the Middlebury football student-athletes."
Â
During the previous two years with the Cadets, Madden served as the assistant head coach for defense, alongside being the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. He guided Shayne Leddy, who was named the 2024 Defender of the Nation Award Recipient. Norwich led the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) in passing yards allowed per game (133.3) and was second-best with 1,333 yards given up through the air.
Â
Before returning to Norwich in 2023, Madden served for a year as the defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator at Benedictine University (Ill.) Madden first reported to the Cadet staff from 2019 through 2021 as the defensive backs coach. He oversaw a secondary that led the NEWMAC in passing yards allowed per game (179.6). Two athletes earned a spot on the all-conference team, while one was a member of the D3football.com All-East Region Third Team.
Â
He came to Norwich in 2019 after serving as a coach at Elon University. Over four seasons, Madden served in multiple capacities, including being elevated to defensive coordinator and linebacker coach before the 2017 season. Following Elon's first season as a member of CAA Football in 2016, Madden's defensive line saw Dustin Ruff collect all-league accolades.
Â
Madden spent the previous two seasons at Tufts, serving as the linebackers coach, special teams coordinator and defensive line coach. During the 2013 campaign, Tufts kickers ranked fourth in the NESCAC in kickoff yardage with 58.7 yards per attempt. He coached Mike Rando, who garnered first-team all-league honors as a return specialist. In Madden's initial season with the program, the Jumbos slotted near the top of the league in punt return average (35.1) and net punting yardage (32.1) per contest.
Â
He has also made coaching stops at Lawrence Academy, the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League (UFL), the University of New Hampshire, Boston College, Columbia University and Wesleyan University. During Madden's time at Boston College, the Eagles won back-to-back ACC Atlantic Division crowns. Madden graduated from Wesleyan in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies. He was a four-year player for the Cardinals.
