Panthers Compete at Farley Inter Regional Extravaganza

Benjamin Hughes set the program record in the 1,500-meter run.
The Middlebury men's track and field squad clocked two program records and a plethora of top-10 finishes during the two-day Farley Inter Regional Extravaganza hosted by Williams.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Benjamin Hughes established a program mark in the 1,500-meter run, stopping the clock at 3:47.94 to finish in second place. Ethan Sholk (3:56.69) and Benjamin Prestes (3:58.69) finished 17th and 20th, respectively.
  • During the 4x400 relay, the Panther quartet of Emerson Kington, Wyatt Lawton, Lachlan Bishop and Joey Caspar penned a Middlebury record effort of 3:11.79. The grouping trailed Colby's contingent by less than two-hundredths of a second for runner-up laurels.
  • Caspar garnered an additional second-place showing in the 400 hurdles, crossing the line at 53.42 seconds. Nate Gardner followed less than a second later in third (54.33).
  • In the 3,000 steeplechase, Solomon McDow and Owen Johnson each landed in the top 10. McDow clocked a 9:13.60 to grab third, while Johnson's showing of 9:34.44 slotted ninth.
  • Donnell Harvey Jr. dashed to a clocking of 10.77 seconds in the 100, good for third in the event. He also joined Sebastian Hoiland, Caspar and Aidan Castanon in contributing to a fifth-place outing in the 4x100 relay at 41.76.
  • In the 800, Zach Utz powered the Panthers with a time of 1:52.00 for fifth. Cameron Miles also finished inside the top 20, stopping his clock at 1:54.63.
  • Quinn Kennedy earned a spot in the 110 hurdles final after qualifying with a sixth-place preliminary effort of 15.22 seconds. He also took sixth in the evening session with a 15.68.
  • Sam Spector finished seventh in the hammer throw with a second toss of 52.55m.
  • In the triple jump, Jed Nelson (13.22m) and Tony Wang (12.48m) finished 11th and 14th, respectively.
  • Nelson locked down a 12th-place showing in the long jump with his initial leap of 6.22m. Paul Marzella hit the sand at 5.96m on his second try for 15th, while Wang's secondary soaring of 5.87m slotted 16th.
  • Gavin Hetherington rounded out the top-20 finishers in the discus, hurling the implement 39.20m to take 18th.
NOTES
  • Hughes bested the prior 1,500 record of 3:48.48 established by Ziggy Goddard '25 last spring by 0.54 seconds.
  • The 4x400 contingent cut 0.16 seconds off the previous record of 3:11.95. Arden Coleman '21, James Mulliken '18, Jimmy Martinez '19 and Alex Nichols '17 set the mark during the 2017 slate.
  • Utz's clocking in the 800 was a personal-best effort by 0.96 seconds, while Marzella's distance in the long jump cleared his collegiate-long distance by 0.04 meters.
Middlebury caps its regular season at the MIT Final Qualifier on Thursday. Action is set to begin at 10:00 a.m. from Massachusetts.
