Van Wieren qualifies for the NCAA Singles Championship for the second time.
Elsie Van Wieren of the #12 Middlebury women's tennis team has been selected to compete in the 32-player singles bracket at the NCAA Individual Championships. The national invite begins on Sunday, May 24 at the Champions Tennis Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The University of the South serves as the host for both the team and individual championships. Draws will be released not before 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 23.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Van Wieren makes her second consecutive appearance in the solo portion of the tournament. The Panther looks to avenge a straight-set loss to Emory's Emily Kantrovitz (6-4, 6-1) from last year's edition held in California.
- She comes off a stellar sophomore campaign, posting a 22-6 singles mark with a 15-3 record in dual action at the top flight. Van Wieren is currently ranked seventh in the nation.
- The All-NESCAC First Team Singles selection secured a perfect 10-0 mark in conference play and closed the regular season on a seven-match unbeaten streak.
- Van Wieren has had just three battles go the distance during the spring campaign. She is 2-1 in those matches, with the last coming against Bowdoin's Cara Hung (6-2, 5-7, 6-4) in the side's final match before postseason play.
- The 2025 conference rookie of the year has a 45-12 career mark in singles and an impressive 18-3 record in the top position.
ABOUT THE COMPETITION
- Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Lindsay Eisenman returns to defend her 2025 singles crown. The senior outlasted Wesleyan's Jacqueline Soloveychik (6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-4) in the championship match. Soloveychik will not return to the bracket, as the junior transferred to Boston College.
- Krantrovitz is the only other semifinalist making the trip to the Volunteer State. She sports a 13-2 record as of May 6 and recently had an 11-match winning streak snapped by Washington University-St. Louis' Eliana Hanna (6-0, 6-4) in the University Athletic Association (UAA) semifinals.
- Quarterfinalists Izabele Antanavicius (Emory) and Eleni Lazaridou (Kenyon) also return to the field.Â
- NESCAC foes Amherst and Wesleyan each qualified a player. Tina She, the 2026 NESCAC Player of the Year, went 21-4 over the course of the 2025-26 campaign. Agnes Guggenheim is 13-6 in dual action and was recently named the conference's rookie of the year. Lara Afolayanka (Wesleyan), Leila Epstein (Wesleyan), Cara Hung (Bowdoin) and Lucy Mitchell (Tufts) are alternates for the singles bracket.
