Julian Wu makes his second solo appearance on the national stage.
Julian Wu of the #19 Middlebury men's tennis team has earned a selection to the NCAA Individual Championships. He will compete for a national title in the singles bracket of 32 players. The individual tournament begins on Saturday, May 23, following the conclusion of the team championships at the Champions Tennis Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The draws for the singles and doubles portion of the national invitational will be released on May 22, not before 1:00 p.m.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The senior recently secured his third individual All-NESCAC selection, earning a first-team nod for the second time in his career.
- Wu logged a 12-4 mark in the top spot of the lineup during the spring slate. He is ranked 10th in singles across Division III and third in the Northeast region.
- In the regular-season finale, Wu collected his 80th career singles victory with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) thriller over Bowdoin's Mark Kneiss.
- Wu touts an 81-24 career record during solo action.
- It marks the second appearance on the national stage for Wu, who advanced to the second round of the singles bracket in the 2024 installment.
- In the field of 32 athletes, Wu has played Amherst's Andreas Sillaste (1-0), Bowdoin's Mark Kneiss (2-1), Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Advik Mareedu (0-1), Pomona-Pitzer's Drew Goldman (1-0), Swarthmore's Michael Melnikov (1-0) and Tufts' Javier Gonzalez (0-1).
- Wu looks to join Lubomir Cuba (2017) and Stan Morris (2022) as the third Panther to claim a national title in singles.
ABOUT THE COMPETITION
- Mareedu returns to defend his singles crown after securing his first individual title last year, logging a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Denison's Kael Shah. He is currently ranked first nationally in singles with a 28-2 record.
- Melnikov slots second with a 32-3 mark this season, while Kneiss is third at 25-9. The former bowed out in last season's national semifinal, while the latter advanced to the quarterfinal round.
- Emory's Ruilin Feng (17-2) and Shah (29-4) round out the top five.
- The NESCAC has six representatives in the field, one off the total of seven from the conference who competed a year ago. Along with Sillaste, Kneiss and Gonzalez, Wu's league peers include Bowdoin's Kiran Garapati, Tufts' Alex Ganchev and his teammate Gonzalez.
