  • Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa is the nation's oldest honors society for the liberal arts.
  • Middlebury's chapter can elect up to 10 percent of the senior class each year.
  • Phi Beta Kappa's most identifiable symbol is the key, an important piece of the society developed in its early days. Middlebury owns one of the oldest keys still in existence, which belonged to the first president, Jeremiah Atwater.
