Middlebury Treks To Springfield For Division III New England Championships

Parker Loupessis will compete in two events for the Panthers at the Division III New England Championships.

The Middlebury men's track and field team travels to Springfield, Massachusetts this weekend for the two-day Division III New England Championships hosted by the Pride. 

ABOUT MIDDLEBURY

  • The Panthers have sent competitors to the Division III New England Championships every year since 2000.
  • Middlebury has claimed a top-10 team finish 15 times. The program's best effort came in 2018, a third-place showing out of 32 squads. 
  • This season, 16 individual athletes and one relay team represent the Panthers across 13 events.
  • Middlebury tallied numerous top-10 finishes and claimed fifth as a team in last year's championships, hosted by the Coast Guard Academy.
  • The Panthers secured third at the NESCAC Championships, highlighted by All-NESCAC efforts in a dozen events.

PANTHERS TO WATCH

  • Middlebury boasts numerous competitors with top-10 efforts across the Mideast. Toby Warmack headlines the contingent after securing the conference title in the high jump, logging a leap of 2.03 meters that paces the region by nearly one-tenth of a meter.
  • In the 400-meter hurdles, Joey Caspar owns the best clocking at 52.32 seconds, earning third at the conference invite.
  • Adam Ferreira's runner-up effort of 59.71m in the javelin at last weekend's league event stands second regionally. 
  • Sam Spector has the second-furthest distance in the hammer, heaving the implement at 56.04m.
  • Nate Gardner and Parker Loupessis join Caspar in the 400 hurdles. Gardner recorded the region's second-best effort of 52.88 at the league meet, while Loupessis slots fifth (55.01).
  • Contesting the 110 hurdles are Quinn Kennedy, Loupessis and Caleb Smith. Kennedy's effort of 14.96 seconds at the Amherst Spring Fling ranks fourth in the Mideast, while Loupessis (15.08) and Smith (15.46) hold ninth and 15th, respectively.
  • Several jumpers look to improve their standing at the New England Championships. In the long jump, Smith's record-breaking leap of 7.07m slots fifth in the region. Jed Nelson holds 16th after a 6.69m outing at the league competition, while Tony Wang sits 23rd via his 6.48m effort at the UMass Commonwealth Invitational.
  • In the triple jump, Nelson (13.89m) and Wang (13.74m) are positioned seventh and eighth in the region, respectively.
  • Cameron Miles represents the navy and white in the 800, holding the eighth-fastest time among Mideast competitors at 1:53.21.
  • Ben Martin rounds out the top-10 individuals in the discus. He hurled the implement 44.59m at the UC Riverside Spring Break Classic, good for eighth place regionally.
  • The duo of Calvin Szoradi and Gavin Hetherington rounds out the Panther throwing contingent. Szoradi sits 12th in the shot put (13.60m) and 24th in the discus (41.21m). Hetherington ranks 17th in the latter event (42.94m).
  • Sebastian Pantzer and Hayden Bobowick conclude the individual competitors. Pantzer posted a 21.94 in the 200 at UC Riverside for 16th regionally, while Bobowick holds 27th in the 200 (22.32) and 36th in the 100 (11.08).
  • In relay action, the quartet of Zach Utz, Lachlan Bishop, Cameron Miles and Benjamin Hughes contests the 4x800 after clocking a time of 7:39.83.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION

  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is ranked ninth in the latest United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national poll, while Williams slots 15th and Tufts is 18th. Amherst, slotted #22, rounds out the nationally ranked competitors. Wesleyan claimed the team title last season with 80 points.
  • The field features 10 individual victors from the 2025 installment, headlined by pairs of champions from the Jumbos, Cardinals and Coast Guard Academy.
  • Tufts welcomes back Quinn Hampson and Calvin Cummings, who starred in a pair of distance events. Hampson won the 1,500 with a time of 3:52.52, while Cummings led the pack in the 3,000 steeplechase at 9:24.24.
  • The Wesleyan pair of Steve Paul (21.24) and Noah Mahoney (15.11.26) look to defend their titles on the track in the 200 and 5,000, respectively.
  • Ian Naff contends for his second individual crown for the Bears in the 400 after an effort of 47.43 a season ago. Paul Hobbs is the reigning 10,000 champion with a clocking of 31:32.37.
  • Other returners with individual titles include UMass Dartmouth's Ancil Alexander in both the discus (51.78m) and shot put (15.46m), Southern Maine's Christian Burke in the decathlon (6,074 points), Fitchburg State's Liam Bourassa in the javelin (68.99m), and Haytham Ramadan of St. Joseph's (ME) in the 800 (1:50.85).
