Members of the Middlebury men's and women's track and field teams celebrate during day two of the NESCAC Championships.
The Middlebury men's track and field team scored 141 points to claim third place at the NESCAC Championships in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Amherst won its first conference title in either gender with 159 points, while Tufts finished five tallies behind in second.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The 4x400-meter relay quartet of Wyatt Lawton, Emerson Kington, Lachlan Bishop and Joey Caspar clocked a victorious time of 3:13.17. Caspar closed the gap as the anchor, recording a 47.00-second split to surpass Bowdoin's Noah Rockey on the final turn.
- Adam Ferreira placed second in the javelin, heaving the implement 59.71 meters during his fourth attempt. Caleb Smith joined the rookie in the top 10, finishing sixth via his toss of 53.37m.
- A quartet of Panthers claimed points in the 3,000 steeplechase. Owen Johnson clocked a 9:06.00 to secure runner-up honors, while Solomon McDow took fourth with his time of 9:09.39. Kieran McBride (9:11.55) and Ian Larkin (9:16.96) earned fifth and eighth place, respectively.
- Middlebury and Tufts battled it out for the 4x800 relay title. Cameron Miles, Benjamin Prestes, Jakob Kuelps and Zach Utz combined for the second-best time of 7:39.83. The clocking was 0.29 seconds behind the Jumbo's winning mark.
- Amherst's Cody Pierce and Joey Caspar were neck and neck in the championship heat of the 400. Pierce (47.11) bested Caspar (47.39) for the top spot. Emerson Kington also represented the navy and white in the event, stopping the clock at 48.97 seconds for seventh.
- Donnell Harvey Jr. secured second in the 100 final at 10.64, while Aiden Castanon was 0.21 seconds back in sixth (10.85).
- During the discus, Ben Martin logged a toss of 44.44m on his fourth attempt to grab bronze. Calvin Szoradi (41.21m) earned 10th.
- The 4x100 relay squad of Sebastian Hoiland, Hayden Bobowick, Sebastian Pantzer and Harvey Jr. landed in third place with their combined clocking of 41.51 seconds.
- Caspar logged his second top-three finish of the championships in the 400 hurdles, stopping the clock at 52.32 for third. Nate Gardner grabbed fifth after crossing the finish line at 53.12.
- Benjamin Hughes earned fourth in the 1,500, crossing the finish line at 3:51.23. Prestes also made the championship final, racing to an eighth-place showing with his clocking of 3:53.17.
- In the 110 hurdles, Finn Albright claimed fourth with a time of 15.04 seconds, while Parker Loupessis was eighth (15.58).
- Jed Nelson secured a leap of 13.89m on his final attempt to earn sixth in the triple jump. Tony Wang was a spot behind after his performance of 13.74m.
- Lachlan Bishop and Hughes represented the navy and white in the 800. Bishop clocked a 1:53.40 to secure sixth, and Hughes (1:55.13) nabbed eighth place.
- Harvey Jr. logged three points for the Panthers during the 200, finishing sixth with a time of 21.76.
- Ethan Sholk showcased a 10th-place effort (14:47.09) during his conference meet debut in the 5,000.
NOTES
- The Panthers 4x400 clocking of 3:13.17 reset the NESCAC meet record by over two seconds. It also marked the seventh time that Middlebury has claimed the event at the championship invite and the first since 2019.
- Caspar shaved 0.18 seconds off his previous record time of 47.53 set at the Mangrum Invitational earlier this season.
- Over the two-day meet, the program recorded two event victories and reset the school record in both the long jump (7.07m) and high jump (2.03m).
- It marks the third time in the last five years that the squad has claimed bronze or better at the NESCAC Championships.
The Panthers head back to Massachusetts for the two-day Division III Outdoor New England Championships. Action kicks off on Friday at 11:30 a.m.
