#17 Panthers Drop 4-3 Decision to #11 Polar Bears in Regular-Season Finale

The 17th-ranked Middlebury men's tennis team battled to the end but came up short in Sunday's 4-3 defeat to #11 Bowdoin at the Outdoor Tennis Courts.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The navy and white swept the doubles action. Hugh Hentschel and Julian Wu kickstarted the contest with a 6-3 victory over Kiran Garapati and Simon Catanzaro in the second flight before Nathan Hernandez and Andrew Yim outlasted Mick Tamas and Aden Dorros for the point-clinching 7-5 triumph at #3.
  • Thehan Wijemanne and Reif Larsen navigated a hard-fought battle with Jackson Codd and Mark Kneiss in the top spot, breaking the deadlock with a 10-8 result to secure the 7-6 decision.
  • The Polar Bears bounced back, using four consecutive wins in individual action to secure the match. Cameron Zia sparked the run with a 6-2, 6-0 win in the fourth position, while Catanzaro gave Bowdoin a 2-1 lead after matching 6-2 results at #5.
  • Codd defeated Larsen in the third slot to extend the advantage. Following a 6-4 triumph, Codd secured a 7-5 tiebreaker to end the match in two frames. Garapati needed three sessions to get by Wijemanne, rallying from a 6-3 defeat with 6-2 and 6-3 outcomes to clinch the match.
  • Yim grabbed the first Panther singles point against Andrew Mendelson. After the Polar Bear claimed the opener by a 7-5 score. Yim rallied for a 7-6 (7-5) outcome to push the match to a superbreaker. He took the third stanza by a 10-6 line.
  • Wu finalized the match with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) victory against Kneiss in the top flight.
NOTES
  • Wu secured his 80th singles triumph in a Middlebury uniform.
  • The Panthers squared off against Bowdoin for the 57th time and own a 36-21 advantage in the series.
Middlebury sets its sights on the upcoming NESCAC Championships. Wesleyan serves as the host for next weekend's three-day event. Seedings and matchup details will be announced by the league office in the coming days.
