The #15 Middlebury men's lacrosse team has secured the seventh seed in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament and will travel to #1/second-seeded Tufts on Saturday for a quarterfinal contest at 3:00 p.m.
ABOUT MIDDLEBURY
- Middlebury appears in the league bracket for the 23rd time as one of three programs to log 22 or more appearances entering this spring.
- The Panthers have won seven conference titles, second most among their counterparts behind Tufts (13).
- The squad ranks second among its peers with 32 tournament triumphs. The Jumbos lead the pack with 43 wins, while Wesleyan slots third with 29.
- Middlebury has conceded 138 goals this season, good for the second-lowest mark in the NESCAC, and the squad's .558 save percentage ranks third.
PANTHERS TO WATCH
- Logan White has spearheaded the Panther attack this season, totalling 43 points on 26 goals and 17 assists. The senior has held the hot stick of late with 23 points across his last four outings, starting with a seven-goal outburst against St. Lawrence that tied for second in single-game program history.
- A consistent contributor in the offensive zone is Will Ford, who carries 21 markers and 10 helpers into the postseason. He set a career-high with six points (1G, 5A) against Union on March 24 and found the back of the net four times against Amherst on April 18.
- Several other members of the navy and white have tallied double-digit goals this season. Cooper DeMallie has rustled the net on 15 occasions, while Nick Marvin (13), Ged Gengras (13) and Brendan Hickey (11) follow close behind.
- At the faceoff dot, Noah Filippelli has excelled, producing the best season of his Middlebury career. He has prevailed in 63.5 percent (158-249) of his battles, the best percentage among NESCAC specialists with at least 200 attempts. Filippelli also ranks third in the league, scooping 5.57 ground balls per contest.
- Drew Dummer has anchored a stingy Panther defense that concedes just under 10 goals per game. He leads the NESCAC with 32 caused turnovers, including a career-best six in the season finale against Williams, alongside 29 grounders. The tandem of Ryan Colella and Bryan Henry has double-digit caused turnover totals with 17 and 10, respectively.
- Hayden Kern has started all 14 games in front of the goal. The senior ranks third in the conference in saves per game (12.29), fourth in save percentage (.557) and fifth in goals against average (10.08). He tied his season-best output during Wednesday's contest against Williams, stopping 17 shots against the Ephs.
ABOUT TUFTS
- Tufts is seeking its league-leading 14th NESCAC Title and seventh in the last eight seasons, having appeared in 25 conference tournaments.
- The Jumbos hold a conference-high 43 wins (43-11) during league tournament action.
- Tufts concluded the year with a 14-1 record and a 9-1 mark in the NESCAC, dropping the regular-season finale to Bowdoin by a 14-12 count to claim the second seed.
- The Jumbos feature the league's top offense, ranking first in goals scored (266), assists per game (10.53), points per game (28.27), groundballs per game (43.73) and clears (363).
- Tufts has also been strong defensively this spring, ranking second in the conference in GAA (9.47) and save percentage (.568). Tufts has also been effective at the faceoff dot, sitting third across the league in winning percentage (.567).
JUMBOS TO WATCH
- Jack Regnery, Brooks Hauser, Chase Beyer and Will Emsing pace the Jumbo attack. Regnery leads the team in points (74), assists (41) and game-winning goals (four), while he ranks second in goals (43). Hauser paces the squad with 46 tallies and slots second in points (60). Beyer has tickled the twine 36 times to go alongside 19 helpers and 41 groundballs, while Emsing is the fourth player above the 50-point plateau with 24 goals and 27 assists.
- Aiding the output for Tufts are Garrett Kelly (28G, 9A) and Jackson Redd (18G, 15A) with 37 and 33 points. Kelly paces the squad with five player-up markers.
- Victor Salcedo and Lucas De la Paz have split time at the faceoff dot. Salcedo has won 111 of his 190 chances for a .584 winning percentage to go alongside a team-best 78 rollers, while De la Paz is 83-of-147 with 54 ground balls.
- Jack Donovan and Logan Lee lead the Jumbo defensive unit. Donovan has caused a team-high 25 turnovers while scoring once and assisting on another, while Lee ranks second on Tufts with 21 caused turnovers and has added a trio of assists. Davis Owens (34GB, 16CT) and William Bonner (23GB, 15CT) are also key defensive contributors.
- In the crease, Jack Old has started 14 games this spring. He sits atop the league ranks in save percentage (.598) and is second in the NESCAC with an 8.54 GAA.
SERIES HISTORY
- Middlebury and Tufts battle for the 65th occasion, with the Panthers holding a 33-30-1 advantage in the all-time series.
- The programs met on March 28 in Vermont, with the Jumbos earning a 17-7 triumph.
- The sides meet in the tournament for the second consecutive year and the third time in the last four installments. The contest marks the 11th meeting between the programs in the NESCAC Tournament and the first in the quarterfinal round.
TOURNAMENT INFORMATION
- The top eight programs qualify for the NESCAC Men's Lacrosse Championship. Quarterfinal games will occur on Saturday, April 25. The winners of the four contests will move on to the semifinal and final rounds scheduled for Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3 at the highest remaining seed. The victor will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championship.
