Baseball Sweeps Twin Bill at Wesleyan

The Middlebury baseball team logged 23 hits over two contests in Saturday's doubleheader sweep at Wesleyan. The Panthers tallied an opening 7-0 victory in seven innings before grabbing a 7-3 triumph in the second contest.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Panthers grabbed an early 2-0 lead to open the contest. A walk drawn by Joe Basso and a double down the right-field line from Sam Gersch put runners in scoring position with one out. After Anthony Pellagrini was hit by a pitch, Aiden Han worked a base on balls to plate the first run. A batter later, Brayden Mathews followed suit with the third Middlebury walk to score Gersch.
  • Middlebury doubled its lead a frame later. With two runners on and one out, Gersch plated Henry Ayers and Basso on a double to center field for a 4-0 score.
  • In the top of the fourth, the navy and white added two more. Samuel Kidd opened the frame with a single to center and came around on a two-bagger by Ayers. Two batters later, Pellagrini placed a run-scoring double into left field for the sixth Panther run of the contest.
  • Middlebury starter Chase Zidlicky excelled, retiring the first 12 batters he faced to keep the Cardinals off the board.
  • Wesleyan tried to spark some momentum in the bottom of the fifth. A walk by Jake Acker and a double to right field by Sam Hensinger put runners on second and third with one out. Zidlicky held strong, recording a strikeout and groundout to quell the chance.
  • The Panthers added some insurance in their final at-bats. Pablo Spielman-Rodriguez led off the frame with a two-bagger and Alexander Glasscock moved him to third on an infield single. JD Collins laid down a perfectly-placed bunt single back to the pitcher to plate Spielman-Rodriguez to make it 7-0. Ayers tallied the eighth run a batter later, bringing home Glasscock on a sacrifice fly to left.
  • James Marsden blasted a leadoff base knock during the Cardinals' final opportunity. Zidlicky stayed the course, retiring the next three batters to seal the 8-0 victory.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS

  • Middlebury tallied in the opening run during the first frame. After two Wesleyan miscues to start the game, Gersch pushed Ayers across the plate on a fielder's choice for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Cardinals looked to counter in the bottom half. Tucker DeWolf and Marsden logged base hits. After DeWolf was picked off of second base by starter Alex Faust, Jonah Timmons moved Marsden to second via a single to left field. Faust stopped the scoring chance by inducing a flyout to center.
  • The guests added to the advantage in the third. Basso smacked an RBI double to left field and later scored on a throwing error to make it 3-0.
  • During the fourth frame, Wesleyan trimmed the lead to a pair, as Kato Mangum scored on a Panther miscue.
  • Ayers worked a one-out walk in the top of the fifth frame. Gersch continued his strong output in the doubleheader, placing a run-scoring single to left for a 4-1 ballgame.
  • In the visiting half of the seventh, Basso plated Ayers with a single that found grass in left to score the fifth run.
  • The Cardinals loaded the bases in the bottom half and cashed in one tally via a run-scoring single into right field by Acker. Timmons tried to cross the plate from second base, but Gersch retired him out on a perfectly thrown ball to Ayers at home.
  • Wesleyan continued to cut into the Panther lead a frame later. Marsden tallied a run-scoring single to make it 5-3.
  • The navy and white battled back during their final chance at the plate. Han laced a triple to left field that scored Pellagrini. Han later crossed the plate on a bunt single from Spielman-Rodriguez, pushing the Middlebury lead back to four.
  • Christian Zebrowski came on in relief and struck out the side to cap the 7-3 triumph and earn the series sweep.

NOTES

  • Zidlicky tallied a gem on the mound during the opening contest, striking out eight Cardinals and allowing just three to reach base over seven innings of work.
  • Gersch reached base four times in the doubleheader, including a pair of doubles in the opening contest. He also logged four total runs batted in.
  • Ayers scored four runs in the second game alongside two doubles. The rookie had five two-baggers over the three-game series.
  • Dylan Knightly tied George Goldstein '22 for the most pitching appearances in a Panther uniform with 53.
  • The Panthers have won nine of the last 10 battles with the Cardinals.

Middlebury closes its non-conference schedule with a Wednesday contest at Vermont State University Castleton. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
