The #4 Middlebury women's ice hockey team scored twice in 42 seconds midway through the opening period and never looked back in a 4-1 Saturday triumph over Trinity.Â
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers peppered Bantam netminder Madeline Carter with three bids spanning 33 seconds, beginning with a shot from Zoe Pincelli at the 1:49 mark. The goalie pushed out and denied each attempt.
- Trinity nearly got on the board with 14 minutes remaining in the opening period. Lily Brook raced up the left side of the ice and flipped a shot on target that Sophia Will deflected to her right.
- Middlebury broke through at the 9:58 mark. Trinity Walsh flipped a pass to Caroline Thomas on the left post. The rookie timed her shot perfectly, tucking it past Carter to make it 1-0.
- The visitors doubled their lead 42 ticks later. Olivia Gordon collected the puck in front of the Panther bench and tapped it off the boards. Kate Flynn grabbed possession and fired a shot from the faceoff circle that found the left side of the net.
- With 33 seconds left, Livia Angioletti lifted a riser from the top of the zone that Will rose and snagged with her glove to keep the two-goal advantage.
- Middlebury extended its lead with 8:18 gone in the second stanza. Jocelyn Means ripped a pass the length of the ice, destined for the left corner of the Bantam zone. Thomas won the race to the puck and backhanded a pass to the front of the crease. Walsh did the rest, tucking it over Carter's right shoulder for a 3-0 advantage.
- Angioletti (12:32) and Annabelle Merkel (12:59) tested Will with shots from the circles, but the Panther tallied a glove and stick save.
- Middlebury netted its fourth goal at the 13:28 mark. Avery McInerny had a shot bounce off Carter's right pad. Before the puck got to the corner, Olivia Gordon skated in and wrapped it inside the right post.
- Trinity challenged Will with three shots over 34 seconds beginning with 5:31 left in the period, but the captain made all three stops.
- The hosts broke the shutout with 6:33 expired in the third stanza when Brook snuck a shot past Will into the left side of the net.
- Trinity held a 4-3 shots on goal edge over the final 13:47, but could not trim the deficit any further as Middlebury tallied the 4-1 triumph. Â
