Six Podium Efforts Pace Middlebury’s Third-Place Finish at UVM Carnival

The Middlebury ski teams claimed six combined podium finishes over the eight disciplines to earn third place at the University of Vermont Carnival. The Catamounts took home top honors with 846 points, while Dartmouth (797.5 points) secured second by 2.5 points over the Panthers (795 points).
 
MEN'S ALPINE HIGHLIGHTS
  • Milan Novak garnered gold with a combined clocking of 2:02.62. His second-run time of 1:00.18 was Thursday's fastest individual effort.
  • Also earning a podium placement by one-hundredth of a second was Julian Arthur (2:04.39). The Panther narrowly leaned ahead of Colby's Townsend Mikell and Harvard's Duncan Armstrong to avoid a three-way tie for fourth.
  • Sebastian Segre rounded out the Panther scorers by placing seventh, completing his two trips down the mountain at 2:04.55.
  • Arthur secured his second top-three finish of the carnival on Friday, trailing Dartmouth's Oscar Zimmer by four-hundredths of a second for runner-up honors in the slalom (1:48.82).
  • Segre sped down the course over his two runs, concluding his race in 1:50.57 to take ninth.
  • The final Panther scorer was Toby Jennings, who finalized a top-20 finish in 19th at 1:52.40.
WOMEN'S ALPINE HIGHLIGHTS
  • Kjersti Moritz tallied her second victory in six days during the giant slalom, blazing through two runs in 2:07.34 to win by nearly 1.5 seconds.
  • Kaite Fynn logged a two-run showing of 2:10.97 to place 12th.
  • Finalizing the Middlebury point-getters was Sophia Palmquist, whose clocking of 2:14.44 ranked 31st.
  • Sara Paradis headlined the Panther women in Friday's competition, taking 12th with an overall effort of 1:58.19.
  • Palmquist followed her teammate on the leaderboard, finishing her two runs in 1:58.55 to finish a spot behind.
MEN'S NORDIC HIGHLIGHTS
  • During Friday's sprint, Nathan Doughty posted a runner-up clocking in the final, crossing the line in a time of 3:29.8.
  • Peter Warner collected a top-10 effort competing in the ultimate event with a time of 3:33.6 for seventh, while Mason Wheeler was 11th with his fastest clocking of 3:33.6 occurring in the semifinals. 
  • In Saturday's 10K that featured frigid conditions, Wheeler led the Panthers to the line in seventh at 26:52.5.
  • Finn Veit was 12 seconds out of the top-10 spots on the leaderboard in 14th (27:10.8), while Warner completed the scoring trio in 27th (27:46.6).
WOMEN'S NORDIC HIGHLIGHTS
  • The women's squad collected solid efforts in the sprint on Friday with a trio of Panthers in the top-11 positions and winning the discipline with 110 points.
  • Leading the way was Mica Bodkins with a clocking of 4:03.2 to claim bronze.
  • Also qualifying for the finals was Sofia Scirica, finishing in sixth with a time of 4:09.6.
  • In the semifinal heat, Shea Brams raced to a time of 4:12.0 to claim 11th.  
  • Brams grabbed a spot in the top 10 to lead the Middlebury contingent in Saturday's 10K. The Panther finished sixth with a time of 30:53.6.
  • Bodkins (31:09.9) and Scirica (31:10.9) closed out the weekend with 10th and 11th places, respectively.
NOTES
  • Novak's giant slalom title is his first with the navy and white.
  • Beth McIntosh tallied a career-best finish on Saturday, skating across the finish line in 12th (31:12.9).
Middlebury returns to action at the Williams Carnival, beginning on Friday from Jiminy Peak Mountain (alpine) and Prospect Mountain (nordic).
