#4 Middlebury Drops 2-1 Overtime Decision at #15 Plattsburgh State

The fourth-ranked Middlebury women's ice hockey team closed its non-conference slate with a 2-1 overtime defeat against #15 Plattsburgh State on Tuesday evening.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Kate Flynn looked to get the Panthers on the board with 1:19 elapsed, firing a bid toward the right post that Cardinal netminder Maddy Stetson smothered.
  • Plattsburgh had an opportunity off the stick of Bailey MacKellar 27 seconds later via a backhand bid on the doorstep that Sophia Will denied.
  • The hosts had consecutive point-blank chances beginning at the 5:03 mark. Lauren Farris hustled into the zone for a one-timer that bounced off Will's pads. Farris tried again, but her rebound attempt was steered aside.
  • With 9:55 elapsed, Molly Riggi skated behind the Middlebury goal and flipped a pass in front to a darting Zoe Puc. The forward muscled a bid from directly in front of Will, who denied the opportunity.
  • The Cardinals gained an extra skater and nearly cashed in at the 17:05 mark. Emily Kasprzak collected possession in the left corner and skated toward the crease before lifting a backhand bid that Will stuffed.
  • The Panthers took the lead with 3:52 expired in the second stanza. Caroline Thomas hustled up the ice, creating a two-on-one chance with linemate Avery McInerny. The rookie fired a crisp feed to McInenry, who poked it into the center of the net.
  • Plattsburgh tied the game at the 12:14 mark when MacKellar tucked the puck inside the right post on a pass from Kasprzak.
  • The hosts pushed the envelope in the opening seconds of the third period. MacKellar won a battle for the puck and fired a sizzler near the crease. Will stood her ground and denied the bid.
  • Olivia McManus and McInerny combined for three rapid chances beginning at the 7:55 mark. Stetson stopped all three with her right pad.
  • Brooke Terry thought she gave the hosts the lead on the power play with 8:22 to go, ripping a bid that nearly snuck into the left side of the net. Will made the highlight reel save, smothering the puck with her glove and covering it while rolling to her left.
  • Emma Hannah tried to score the golden goal at the 16:35 mark via a blast from the right faceoff circle. Despite a sea of navy and red, Stetson read the shot and kicked it aside to push the contest into overtime.
  • The Cardinals tallied the decisive goal with 2:03 to go in the extra period, as MacKellar poked the puck past Will to claim the 2-1 triumph.

NOTES

  • Will made a career-high 42 stops in the setback. Her save total moves her into second all-time with 1,481.
  • Thomas and McInerny extended their point streaks to eight and five consecutive contests, respectively.
  • The programs battled for the 47th time.
