The seventh-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team swept #4 Pomona-Pitzer (7-0) in the opening round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women's National Team Indoor Championships.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The third doubles pairing of Diya Pachamuthu and Elsie Van Wieren bested Tessa Ellingson and Sofia Kalyva 6-3 to open the match. Gusty Beveridge and Lulu Wu followed suit, outlasting Lauren Rha and Leticia Bazua for a 6-4 triumph to secure the doubles point.
- Ren Barton and Anna Lardner overcame a strong opponent in the #2 tilt, besting Ishya Bhavsar and Meha Chaudhary in a 7-5 battle.
- In singles action, Van Wieren cruised in the #1 spot (6-1, 6-1) against Rha. Lardner followed with a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Bazua in the second spot to establish a 3-0 edge.
- Barton picked up a straight-set victory over Kalyva (6-1, 6-3) at #5 to clinch the match. Charlotte McCann dropped just three games in a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Bhavsar in sixth singles to clinch the match (5-0).
- Wu and Chaudhary battled to a tiebreaker in the second set, but Wu prevailed 7-4 to claim the fourth spot (6-2, 7-6).
- The longest match of the evening was claimed by Beveridge. The Panther tallied a 6-3 opener before Mireille Chedid-Daley nabbed the second set, 6-4. Beveridge prevailed from the bout with a 10-6 super tiebreak to secure the sweep.
NOTES
- The sides squared off for the 16th time. Middlebury owns a 10-6 edge in the all-time series.
- The triumph snapped a three-game losing streak to the Sagehens.
With the win, the squad advances to tomorrow's ITA Indoor Semifinal against #2 University of Chicago at 10:00 a.m. CT / 11:00 a.m. ET with a spot in Sunday's Indoor Championship on the line.
