#13 Panthers Rally Late, Defeat #16 Williams in NESCAC Quarterfinals

Lucy Ronda clinched the comeback with a win at the bottom of the ladder.

The 13th-ranked/fourth-seeded Middlebury women's squash team stormed back from a 4-3 deficit to earn a 5-4 victory over #16/fifth-seeded Williams in the NESCAC Quarterfinals on Saturday. The conference tournament is being hosted by Hamilton.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Ephs began the affair with victories at #7 and #5 to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Lindsey Burnham got the Panthers on the board, shaking off an opening game loss to defeat Rhea Pandit (9-11, 11-6, 11-3, 11-7) at the top of the ladder.
  • In the third slot, Izzy Ronda tallied a four-game victory (4-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-6) to knot the contest at 2-2.
  • Williams grabbed wins in two of the next three matches to jump ahead, 4-3. Sabrina Schwarz kept Middlebury within striking distance with a sweep at #4.
  • Aanvi Anand grinded out a triumph in four (12-10, 9-11, 11-6, 11-7) from the second position to knot the contest at 4-4.
  • In the decisive ninth game, Lucy Ronda and Mahika Gupta split the first four games. The Panther took control in the final game, sealing an 11-8 result to send Middlebury to the semifinals.

NOTES

  • Sabrina Schwarz and Lucy Ronda tallied their 25th and 15th victories with the navy and white, respectively.
  • The programs met for the 66th time overall, with 11 of those occurring in the NESCAC Tournament.
  • Middlebury's win avenges a 6-3 loss to the Ephs in the 2025 conference quarterfinals.
  • The result marks the first back-to-back triumphs over Williams in the same season since the 2010-11 campaign.

The Panthers move on to the semifinals against the winner between #6 Trinity and Wesleyan. The match will not begin before 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
