Men’s Track and Field Earns Four Event Titles at MNESCI in Massachusetts

Caleb Smith had three top-eight finishes across three events.

The Middlebury men's track and field team secured four event victories on Sunday at the New England Small College Invitational from the TRACK at New Balance in Boston, Massachusetts.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Benjamin Hughes earned the top spot in the mile with a clocking of 4:09.72. His time was 0.18 seconds faster than runner-up Parker Boyle from Amherst. Also finishing in the top eight was Owen Johnson, who claimed sixth with his time of 4:13.34.
  • The 4x400-meter relay quartet of Emerson Kington, Sebastian Pantzer, Wyatt Lawton and Joey Caspar stopped the clock at 3:20.25 to secure first place.
  • In the meet's fastest event, Donnell Harvey Jr. crossed the finish line nearly a second ahead of the runner-up at 6.83 seconds. Aidan Castanon also made the final, claiming sixth with his time of 7.08.
  • Toby Warmack secured top honors in the high jump, clearing a height of 2.02 meters. Caleb Smith and Drew McStay each got over the 1.87m bar to claim third and a share of fifth, respectively.
  • Jed Nelson tallied runner-up accolades in the long jump with a leap of 6.56m on his initial attempt. Tony Wang was two spots back at 6.40m.
  • Finn Albright trailed Hamilton's Ian Fisher by two-hundredths of a second in the 60 hurdles to finish third after stopping the clock at 8.54 seconds. Smith also made the championship heat, earning eighth with his time of 8.80.
  • In the 4x800 relay, Lachlan Bishop, Zach Utz, Johnson and Cameron Miles had a combined clocking of 7:59.48 to claim bronze.
  • Closing out the top-three finishers was Johnson, who crossed the line third in the 3,000 (8:35.69).
  • Middlebury had two finishers of fifth or better in the 400. Joey Caspar grabbed fourth with a time of 49.67, while Lawton was a spot behind at 49.80.
  • Wang (13.46m) and Warmack (13.39m) finished fourth and sixth in the triple jump, respectively.
  • Smith cleared 4.45m on his first attempt to earn fifth in the pole vault, while Caden Cote was seventh with his mark of 4.15m.
  • Tallying a fifth-place showing in the 5,000 was Nathan Szubin, who crossed the line in 15:08.14.
  • Sam Spector saved his best toss for last in the weight throw, logging a 14.87m heave to earn fifth. Andreas Paganos was 0.11 meters behind in sixth.
  • In the 5,000, Felix Rogovin (15:23.16) and Jared Rife (15:31.55) claimed sixth and eighth place.
  • Harvey Jr. took sixth during the 200 with a time of 22.30, while Kington (49.97) secured seventh during the 400.
  • Closing out the top-eight finishers was Calvin Szoradi, who earned sixth in the shot put with a heave of 13.50m. 

Middlebury heads back to Massachusetts to compete in the Tufts Invitational on Saturday, February 7. The invite is set to begin at 10:00 a.m.
