Balanced Approach Guides #2 Middlebury To 8-0 Victory Over Maine Maritime

Eight different Panthers scored and 27 players saw the field in the second-ranked Middlebury men's soccer team's 8-0 win over Maine Maritime Academy on Sunday at South Street Field.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Will Sawin opened the scoring 17 seconds into the contest, settling a long ball from JT Federman and navigating through three Mariners before tucking his left-footed bid into the back of the net.
  • Garrett Loyd looked to equalize in the fifth minute, but his header jumped over the crossbar and out of play.
  • The Panthers doubled their advantage with 19:36 remaining. Sam Dolan found Antonio Cosentino in the box for a quick flick behind to a dashing Jack Bartlett, who jostled the left panel for a two-goal advantage.
  • Less than three minutes later, Cosentino penned his name in the goal column. The junior blitzed past a lunging defender and tattooed a righty attempt past Mariner netminder Reagan Moynihan to extend the lead to 3-0.
  • Sawin created a golden opportunity for a fourth navy and white tally, using his chest to collect a feed from Hugo Horwitz and firing a righty shot. Moynihan tracked the chance and laid out to his right to usher the shot away.
  • Horwitz connected for a sharp header directed to the upper-left corner with 11:20 remaining in the stanza, but the chance clanged off the crossbar.
  • Dolan helped Horwitz find the back of the net in the 40th minute, uncorking a long ball up the sideline that Horwitz corralled and tucked into the left panel for a 4-0 advantage through 45 minutes.
  • Middlebury scored its fifth tally in the 51st minute. Samuel Leroyer flicked an attempt that bounced off the left post and toward Nate Dunlop, who tapped the ball over the line.
  • Leroyer jumped into the scoring column with 57:45 gone, burying a feed from Jamie Vega Espinosa for the squad's sixth marker before Anderson Gardner added a goal in the 81st minute off a feed by Horwitz.
  • The Panthers capped the match with a highlight-reel finish. After a give-and-go with Gardner, Macallister Graham crossed the ball in to a sprinting Eric Outwater, who climbed the ladder for a header into the right side of the net to establish the 8-0 final score.
