The Middlebury men’s track and field team begins its indoor season on Saturday, January 10 when it hosts the Snowflake Invitational. The squad aims to continue the momentum from a strong 2025 slate, featuring its third NESCAC Championship and a top-10 finish at the New England Division III Outdoor Championships for the eighth-straight spring.

Donnell Harvey Jr. and Emerson Kington return to the track in the sprinting events. Harvey Jr. earned USTFCCCA All-American honors in the 60-meter dash last winter, finishing 14th after lowering the school record in the event earlier in the campaign. The Panther claimed six podium finishes in the 60, including a pair of wins. Harvey Jr. garnered all-region accolades in multiple events (100, 400). He was also a member of the school-record and NESCAC-winning 4x100 relay and the league’s individual champion in the 100 during the outdoor campaign.

Kington enjoyed a strong rookie season, highlighted by an All-American effort indoors as a part of the distance medley relay (DMR) that finished in ninth place. He garnered all-region praise in multiple events, including the 400 indoors and the 100 outdoors. Kington teamed up with Harvey Jr. on the winning 4x100 relay team at the conference meet while securing all-region laurels in the 4x400 and helping reset two relay records.

Zach Utz, Lachlan Bishop and Joey Caspar excelled a year ago in the middle-distance events. Utz contributed to the All-American DMR team indoors, which also garnered all-region accolades. The pair of Bishop and Utz were both members of the 4x800 squads that set school records in both seasons and finished as the runner-up in the event at the league meet. Caspar earned all-region accolades outdoors in the 400 hurdles and ran a leg in the All-NESCAC 4x400 relay (third).

Over his first two campaigns, Caleb Smith has produced successful efforts in the heptathlon and decathlon events. He broke the school record in the heptathlon, posting his best total of 4,952 points to win the Middlebury Winter Classic. A few weeks later, Smith paced the event at the Division III New England Championships to earn all-region accolades and qualify for the NCAA Championships. He translated that success to the decathlon, winning the title at the Carla Coffey Invitational and Williams’ Farley Interregional Extravaganza. He garnered All-NESCAC accolades with a third-place showing in the high jump and claimed all-region honors in the decathlon.

Sam McGarrahan returns after a superb season in the field events. He qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the high jump, clearing the bar with the 18th-best height at 1.95 meters. McGarrahan topped the podium in the event during the Division III New England Championships, soaring to a school-record effort of 2.05 meters. He also set the program mark in the long jump, leaping 6.81 meters at Middlebury's New England Small College Invitational. McGarrahan became the NESCAC Champion in school-record fashion in the high jump (2.00 meters) and recorded a third-place leap in the long jump. His high jump efforts outdoors earned him all-region honors.

The men’s team is poised to have another successful season after securing numerous qualifiers for the New England meets a year ago. We look to build off a squad that produced its highest number of athletes ever for the Division III New England Championship and had several All-Americans. Scoring in all four areas of sprints, jumps, throws and distance will be key to our success.
Head Coach Martin Beatty ‘84

The Panthers are guided by Beatty ‘84, who begins his 38th year leading the program. He is rejoined by assistant coaches Nicole Wilkerson, Bruce Ingersoll, Kevin Chu '14 and Jake Rigoli, along with new assistants Will Behm ‘22 and Xander Swann ‘25.
