Middlebury Rolls to 4-0 Win Over New England College

The Middlebury men's ice hockey team cruised to a 4-0 win over New England College on Sunday evening in its first of six straight road games.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers eyed an early tally after a Pilgrim penalty just 3:22 into the opening period. Tyler Wishart, Jake Stevens and Bobby May each tested goalie Danny Miscavish, who saved all three bids during the power play.
  • Matteo Viglino looked to jump ahead with 13:35 remaining in the session, but Andrew Heinze denied the opportunity. The Middlebury penalty kill unit was tested at the 12:23 mark and held down the fort, holding New England College without a shot on goal.
  • The guests pulled ahead with 2:32 left in the first stanza. Dante Palombo guided a feed from Luc Malkhassian into the net to establish the 1-0 edge.
  • New England College looked to knot the contest with their second extra-skater opportunity at the 7:51 mark. Heinze saved the initial chance from Jack Herron before Michael Fairfax blocked two attempts to keep the lead.
  • May widened the Panther margin less than a minute later, depositing a build-up from Jack Silverman and Stevens with 9:13 remaining to increase the distance to 2-0.
  • A New England College penalty aided Middlebury's third lamp-lighting of the contest. Silverman and Malkhassian paved the way for Revy Mack to push the puck in, building a 3-0 lead with 1:54 to go in the frame.
  • Heinze stopped two Pilgrim chances from Dylan Duckson and Brennan before the second intermission to keep the hosts off the board.
  • The guests peppered the goal early in the third stanza, demanding five saves from Miscavish through the initial 3:30 of action.
  • The Panthers capped the scoring with their second power-play goal of the contest with 14:01 remaining. Malkhassian found the back of the net to stretch the lead to 4-0.
  • Middlebury tallied four straight bids across 36 seconds during a power play with 5:40 remaining, but the New England College netminder turned away each try.
  • Egor Osipik and Patrick Lindbohm dialed up attempts in the waning seconds, but Heinze stonewalled both to secure the 4-0 final.
NOTES
  • Malkhassian tallied three points on one marker and two helpers, good for his best single-game assist and point total as a Panther.
  • Silverman logged two assists for his third multi-helper game in the navy and white.
  • Palombo notched his third goal of the campaign and won nine of his 13 faceoff attempts.
  • Sunday's contest was the 36th in the all-time series between the teams. Middlebury holds a 30-5-1 advantage and a 5-1-0 record in the last six meetings.
The Panthers ready for a NESCAC weekend beginning Friday against Trinity (Conn.) at 7:00 p.m.
