Middlebury Honors Seniors During Two-Day Home Invitational

The program honored its senior class prior to Saturday's second session.
The Middlebury men's swimming and diving team wrapped up the regular season with 12 first-place finishes and numerous strong efforts during its two-day home invitational. Before Saturday's second session, the program honored seniors Nick Anderson, Andrew Dou, Hugh Hutchinson, Ryan Mauney, Luke McNamara, Tom Morgan, Paul Shen, Nathan Stellmach and Owen White along with student coach Anthony Huang.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers swept the five relay events in emphatic fashion. The 200-yard freestyle team of Dou, Prin Chantarangkul, Mark Pearcy and Jason Chiappinelli won with a time of 1:24.33. 
  • A few events later, the 200 medley group composed of McNamara, Cal Hale, Mauney and Dou secured first place with a clocking of 1:34.61, while the 400 medley relay of McNamara, Shen, Dou and Chiappinelli logged a winning effort of 3:26.18. 
  • In the other two freestyle relays, the 400 quartet of John Masiello, Rodin McKenna, Dou and Chantarangkul touched first in 3:06.04, while the 800 team of Owen Currie, Masiello, Chiappinelli and McNamara led the field to the wall in 7:01.97.
  • McNamara claimed a pair of individual triumphs. He posted a clocking of 50.93 in the 100 butterfly, ahead of Mauney in 52.20 and Finnian Helman with an effort of 52.24. The senior stopped the clock with a victorious showing in the 200 backstroke (1:54.84).
  • Parker Smith led a trio of Middlebury swimmers to the wall in the 50 butterfly that were separated by five-hundredths of a second. Smith's triumphant time of 23.78 edged Masiello in 23.79 and Helman in 23.83.
  • In the 100 breaststroke, Hale was the only competitor under the one-minute mark with a victorious time of 58.81.
  • Pearcy touched first in the 50 breaststroke (26.69), while Chiappinelli took second (27.49) and Stellmach was third (27.51).
  • The other two wins came from Shen in the 200 breaststroke (2:01.17) and Ethan Hann-Deschaine during the 200 fly (1:57.87).
  • Matthew Sonne tallied a pair of runner-up efforts in the 50 back (25.38) and the 500 free (4:49.67). 
  • Hale swam to second in the meet's fastest event, touching the wall with a time of 21.75 in the 50 free. Other second-place showings came from Helman in the 100 free (48.50), Stefanos Salas during the 400 individual medley (4:11.72) and Keith Hartman in the 100 backstroke (53.60).
  • On the diving boards, White produced a pair of strong outcomes. He was the runner-up in the 1-meter event, accumulating 413.30 points, while he garnered silver on the 3-meter board with 398.15 points.
NOTES
  • Shen's win was his fifth of the winter in the breaststroke events, while McNamara secured his third and fourth across multiple strokes.
The Panthers are idle for nearly three weeks, gearing up for the NESCAC Championship. The four-day event begins on Thursday, February 19 with Colby serving as the host school.
